Hey Guys. I'm new to Pixel Join+ so hello to everyone!
I make 3D renders of pixel art characters. Its not pixel art in the purist sense but you might like it none the less:

Ello. Wrong place for this you silly billy. Moved for ya.
Tbh i don't really like the fact you're selling this stuff when you didn't actually design or pixel what you're rendering in 3d. Quite an interesting idea though, might be neat to have it done to some original stuff.

Is this legal? I mean, you're making money off other people's work.

I'm creating something new, where do you draw the line? If I made up the pixels out of sweets and took a photo that would be fine. Using the actual names of the characters is probably not. Btw its not making money from other people's work, the images maybe based on an unoriginal source but the 3D takes time and effort. Its like saying an electronic music artist is rubbish because he uses a record sample. Also its a hobby making a few £ a month, I'm hardly a multi millionaire. But thanks for your comment.

I am working on/feature original works, the nintendo images are just to get me up and running.

Many companies copyright names and likenesses too.
On a side note:
I could easily write an OpenGL driven program that exports cube figures of sprites in a matter of seconds. I think you're doing it the hard way. It is more of an algorithm than art, take a pixel read the color values and then plot a cube in the respective color. Algorithms while sometimes useful and elegant are not an art. I would probably release it under a demoscene effect and people could load their own sprites. It would be useless beyond the initial effect however.

Whilst I think the pixel pieces aren't different enough from the originals to warrant the comparison to sample based music, I really love your videos, especially the block beat ones, they are amazing; that's the way I visualise music, especially stuff by people like Autechre. Did you make the music too? How did you synchronise the sound and visuals? Have you got any higher quality version of those three block beat videos? Very good stuff man.

Yes you are, sorry. The 3D taking time and effort is not excuse to sell something created from an unoriginal source. It is very clear where do you draw the line: don't profit from copyrighted things, it's that easy. If you do it for hobby then don't charge money for it .

I think this is wrong. Very cool actually, but wrong if you are making money of it. Realy, these things look soo cool that you should learn to make pixel art and make these things again! But now, its wrong. And its the most important thing in your image aswell, if there was no origional sprite, there was nothing.. exept for a grey space and the idea to make cubes.

After 4 years studying Fine Art at degree level I don't agree with you when you say it isn't art. Most of you don't agree with the morality of it, thats fine. In terms of profit, I don't make any, the price covers postage, printing and my time - nothing more. Believe me when I say its not for profit, I make a good living from graphic design - this is just a hobby.

Thanks for your comments on my videos. They are quite old now, I did them around 2001 for my degree show. I produced the music too, I figured out a system to beat match the music to the animation. I will probably make more videos in the future when I launch my MP3 website later this year. BTW Autechre, Aphex Twin and Warp Records were a massive influence on me back then.

Its most definately art but not entirely yours.
I don't understand what you mean by the price covers "postage, printing and my time"; that makes it sound like you are getting paid.
Get a different hobby. Or, make the pixels yourself. Many people won't like the fact that you are selling other peoples work, for profit or not.

It's like selling embossed versions of the Mona Lisa. If Da Vinci was alive, he'd probably sue for royalties. So you should probably get permission and send a portion of the profits to the creators of the patterns fromm which you make these.

I have just thought about all your comments over dinner. I can't completely disagree with you because the source is unoriginal. I've decided to phase out the Nintendo / Sega stuff and just create original imagery.
Etsy don't mean 'hand made' literary, there are sections for photography and computer graphics. In terms of copyright they would have to shut down hundreds of shops, if you have a good look around I'd say 25% of stuff on there is from unoriginal sources.
You've made me think about my strategy, which was only to get myself up and running on Etsy, but I don't want to be seen as uncreative. I've spend years slaving over animations, music and design and this kind of negative attention detracts from my achievements.

enablerart: If you truly mean what you said? Then awesome. Stick with pixeljoint and you can pick up any skills you may not already have and before you know it, you'll have your own gallery of pixelart to start selling.
If however, you were just saying that to make everyone shut up so you could go on? Then I have to say... wow! That's some serious stealing going on... sheesh!
