My other WIP can be left alone. I don't like the concept much. Now I came up with the idea of rock band on the ds in a dream, so I'm not sure how fun it would be or if it would be possible. Here's a mock up of a guitar bottom screen:
I want to improve this before I start a top screen.

No, i mean rock band, as in guitar, bass, vocals, and drums. You know, the one for xbox 360 and ps3. I'll make mockups for the other insturments too.

I think you should link us n00bs up with some info on the game.
Pixelling looks fine atm. Screen is very bare though.

Well, wiki's right. I don't know what to do to spice up the fret board though, so I'm leaving it blank for now. The top screen is coing to be where the band is, and that should be a focal point anyway. but if anyone has a non destracting design to put on the fret board, then I would love to know.

You could look at the designs used in the Guitar Hero games. Those worked pretty well. I think any fret board design can be non-distracting as long as you make sure it's fairly dark and relatively low on contrast.

So, how's this?

All I can think of to suggest is to make the highlight on the hair more than just a single line going across horizontally... Make it more strand-like.
Just add two pixels on each side (one pixel per side), one going up, the other going down. It really makes a difference, imo...

Well, I was going to just scrap the character and work from reference, but thanks anyway.

You could try dithering, which seems a little silly... I'd just make two lighter colors and then draw in some lines and highlights. o_9; (You could take a red from the guitar and try a yellow from the shirt...not sure how that would work out, though.)
Good luck, it looks good. :)

Add some shading to the rest of it head, otherwise it looks...flat.
Use some of the black to dither it darker near the ear if nothing else.

Just add a couple more pixels up, I think.
If you want to go with the shiny look on both sides, use the darkest skin tone you can.
Hope that makes at least a little sense. >.>

The only thing that looks wrong to me, is his arms. They look midgetized and fat. Especially his left, our right.
When a person holds a guitar it's more like this:
While this is a slightly different perspective, the only way I could see the (his) left hand working, is if here were turning the head of the guitar towards his body. If he's pointing the guitar outwards, his arm should be even more extended, like this:
Ignore the crappy art, and I hope this helps :)
Even if you're going with the reference, it looks strange unless you add shading to show the arm curving.

The hair looks awesome.
I don't think I'd be of much help right now on the arm. :x

Here's what I have so far. I don't know how to fix the arms without distorting his proportions, so a little help would be nice.
[edit]: please ignore the TRACED guitarist.

Make his left arm thinner on the top of his arm, from his wrist to his inner elbow.
Also make the part near his inner elbow on his right arm thinner, and maybe try to make his hand a bit bigger.

Sorry for posting the trace. I'll re-do the sprite this week-end. I shouldn't even be on the computer now.

Line art

I think you should search some guitarist photos and do the line art from there.
The perspective of the room it's wrong. But you should wait to have the guitarist done, and then do the background. you'll feel when it's right or wrong, your common sense will be your teacher xD.
Good Luck, youre doing good so far!!!!

Here's some work on the new guitarist. I don't know how to get eyebrows to look right, and the colorscheme makes him look too nlue. I was trying to have it look like blue light was shining on him.
Crit would be very nice.
