Whats better PSP or DS ?!?!?!
right now i think that DS is better because
psp had hardware flaws/bugs.
1.
Pressing on the Right pad button, or the Square button, results in you
actually putting pressure on the TFT screen itself. If Sony had
increased the size of the unit by a couple centimeters, this wouldn't
be a problem.
2. UMD disks ejecting in the middle of play for no
reason. This has been admitted by Sony to be a problem which they
"would fix", but I have seen no mentions of a fix anywhere.
3.
Occasional lock-ups. My guess is heat-related, since the UMDs actually
spin much like a CD-ROM, generating heat and general chaos inside of
such a small unit.
Pretty sad bugs for such an expensive device.
Am I telling you to go get a GBA DS? Hardly -- the DS is an amazing
gimmick device (nice to see Nintendo focusing on such DOT-COM-like
garbage...).
Anyways, my advice to potential buyers of the PSP
is to wait. The price is bound to go down, the "bundle" package will
sooner or later be thwarted, quantities will become available, and --
hopefully -- Sony will release a 2nd-generation version or updated
model which will address the hardware flaws in question.

Actually the PSP I been playing on for the last 4 months hasn't had
those problems at all. The dpad was a lil hard to get used to for
Vampire Chronicle but its fine now. I'd say the DS has some flaws
too. Like having its buttons being too damn small and close
together so that people with large hands like myself can't play games
properly cos I have to use the very tip of my thumb to touch the outer
of the button so I don't hit any of the others. I also find the
whole stylus thing more of an irritance rather than a groundbreaking
control feature. My friends already looking how to get his touch
screen fixed too as its become unresponsive from overuse. The top
screen has also shows some discoloration on the bottom.
I'm not buying either machine myself yet but I reckon if I had the
money I'd go for the PSP cos I been enjoying my friends machine more
than his DS and I been following the great progress in emulation
programs for PSP to play SNES, Genesis and all that.
EDIT: My friend just asked if anyone here would know of a way to fix
the DS touch screen cheaply. Probably means whether there are any
tricks or something found by now. Kinda like the stuck pixel
fixer you can get for PSP, DS and GBA.

I own a DS, just got it though. Had no problems so far.
My friend has a PSP. Had no problems either I'd know of.
It's true that the PSP is much more versatile... I mean, emulators,
videos and everything... but isn't that wrong? I mean, we already have
computers, portable too. What a handheld console should be is for
gaming only. Is where DS stands on more solid ground. Touch-screen,
wow. The dual-screen thing isn't that much of a feature, I mean, the
PSP display is probably larger than the DS screens combined.

In my opinion, it isn't really possible to compare the two. One
uses cartridges and the other uses little CD's. It's like
comparing England to America, they may both be countries, but they
difference in the 2 are may to many...

It really doesn't matter about the hardware. Look at the games, not the system.
Honestly though, I don't plan on buying either- I'll just wait for emulators to catch up. Once Castlevania DS comes out though... things might be different. It's the only game I'm looking forward to out of any system in existence right now. I could care less about the next gen systems too- Castlevania DS is all that matters.

When the PSP can come up with a decent and actually new game that isn't
almost exactly the same as whatever game series it came from, the PSP
will be a game system. Otherwise it's just an overhyped portable media
device with low battery life.

A list I put together of all the psp's problems quite a while ago.
---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------
1. Battery Life
-UMD disc motor, media is not solid state. (Requires a motor to spin the disc which consumes more battery life)
-High Speed CPU = more wattage, more power consumption.
- CPU(MIPS) not really made for PDA like device power efficiency.
- Video Chipset more powerful, hence requires more power. (Sony has
already asked game developpers to dumb down gfx because of battery
issues).
- Performance of battery will not be stable, watching a video, cheap
gfx game, high gfx game, listening to music = battery life varies.
- 802.11B, unmodified standard, meaning no power efficiency.
- No option to turn off backlight, which could also save power.
2.Fragility
- UMD motor has moving parts, more likely to brake down. You will have
to be much more careful not to shake or bang your psp, lifespan is
shortened because of this. PSP has moving parts, DS has still parts?
Which do you think will last longer? It's merely physics.
- UMD media is not tolerant with misuse or abusive handling, a few scratches or bumps, bye bye games/movies/music.
- Exposed LCD screen, nice and wide, susceptible to constant
scratching, you will require to buy additional casing!! The LCD screen
will also pick up constant oils and sweat and requires lots of cleaning.
3. Cost
- Expensive, not cost efficient. People who can afford PSPs certainly
can afford Ipods and other media devices which do there media roles
much better. Lack of value for hybrid gaming system. The PSP would've
been alot cheaper if they made all of those addons.
DS = 150$ plus addons.
Mp3 player/mpeg player add on = 79$
Total = 229$.
PSP + Mp3/Mpeg player/image viewer = 250$
The DS you aren't forced to pay for any of the extra features
- Isn't very competitive against the DS's price.
4. Noise
- UMD disc motor makes sounds, doesnt matter how small the media is or
slow it spins, it will make sound, you wont be able to stop this.
Concentration on puzzle games will be frustrating.
5. Proprietary Media Formats
- UMD discs have special format for music and movies. Meaning, you wont
be able to just upload or transfer mp3 songs or movies to your PSP.
You'll have to convert them first to .mp4, which most are too blind to
see before buying their psp.
- You will have to buy your music and movies AGAIN from SONY on UMD
format JUST FOR PSP. Meaning, you wont be able to listen or watch the
media on any other device! What a waste!
6. Launch titles
- Very little amount of exclusive ORIGINAL titles for psp only.
Some of those titles are already available on the DS as well.
Most of the titles have had a small minigame added to them just to avoid breaking sony's "no port rule".
-titles being primarily puzzle and sport games.
7. Loading times (sony has always failed here)
- Any disc type media has load times, which is a disadvantage vs solid state media
8. Internet Acess through WipeOut Pure
-Very time consuming. Takes long to navigate and type in url's
9. Memory Sticks
- Descent memorysticks = expensive and hard to find. a 1 gig pro duo memory card can go for as much as 300$!!!
No organization for any of the files except a "fhuffle" feature for your songs which is considered useless amongst many.
-You will have to buy Sony's priopriatery memory which will be
expensive to save your games, another disadvantage vs solid state media.
10. Heat
-The system tends to heat up after time. This is because of it's motor.
11. ear phones
- Sony has made their ear phones white when their handheld is black.
This is so it can be used by the "in crowd" or those who have ipods so
it can match them.
12. Menu
- The psp can't go to it's menu with out first ejecting a game and
turning it on or booting up the game and then exiting. This problem
does not exist with the DS. You are given an option for it to either
start at the menu, or the ds cartridge.
*Why past competitors lost to the gameboy:
Remember the gamegear? It was much more powerful then the gameboy and
had much more features. It was in full color, had an lcd screen, yet it
lost in terms of portability because of it's batterylife and power
consumption. Took I think around 6 - 8 batteries, and only lasted 4
hours!
I think the better choice would be the DS.
I couldn't really find too many cons for the ds. It's really a well constructed machine.
- Graphics not competitive with the psp
- Wasn't online from the beginning
- PSP's design is much better
- Not as much third party support. Which has already changed and is going to get better as time goes by.
Some one argued with me on another forum that you can't store stuff on the
DS. This is false. The DS is just as capable of storing stuff as the
psp is. There is such thing as flash cartridges which you can buy
and store stuff on. Even downloaded games. The ds also has some
small space for storage built in and can temporarily hold things
through DS Download. Although flash cartridges are much harder to come buy and can usually only be bought online.

I really think the DS isn't living up to it's potential, and it's really sad...
I know nintendo's trying to focus more on family orientated games, but that doesn't mean they can't put more effort into originality.
Back in the old days of the NES and SNES, nintendo was top knotch, man... now things are just going down hill, because no body wants to try anything new. *sigh*
the new wifi stuff will work out well, hopefully..
IF the mana world comes out for DS, that is. Castlevania should sell well, too...
but what else is there? Metroid prime hunters, I guess. Looks really fun, actually.. but I'm not too crazy about metroid pinball.

I thought the whole coming out with two screens and touch-screen was the originality...?
Or do you mean like coming out with some new characters and games?
w/e.
I still want both of them, and I really hope more 3rd party developers start making DS games.

I got a DS recently (see my 'Back from vacation' thread), and I like it a lot...
I'll have to admit that the PSP seems pretty cool too, but I'm not really interested in it, I'll always be a Nintendo fan
The DS may not seem to offer much new right now (but then again, does
the PSP?), but wait till it goes online, and the awesome games are
released (although it already has some awesome games right now too).

I own both. But to tell the truth, I'm looking much more forward to
Nintendo's lineup than the PSP's. I only have 2 games for my psp and
those are Ape Excape, and Tony Hawk. There really hasn't been anything
else too great I occasionaly buy some movies for it though. I also got
the new webbrowser update. :)
I'm not really looking forward to any games on the psp though.
Nintendo has Animal Crossing, Advanced Wars, Mario Kart, Zelda Four
Swords, and many more great online titles to look forward to. I'm a
greater fan of Nintendo titles needless to say.

Well that's fine, but too bad the technology often fails. Nintendo has
always had durability and reliability on it's side and Sony has always
been stuck with fragile systems that, although more advanced
technically, don't perform well enough to efficiently use itself. If
only they had focused more on protecting the unit rather than focusing
on making it able to play music and games, then I might've bought one.

I've grown tired of the whole PSP vs DS debate but there are two things that are important imo.
1. Games you wouldn't get on a home console.
Yoshi T&G, Wario Wario Touched!, Nintendogs, Mr Driller etc.
2. Nintendo First-Party games
Can't beat Nintendo. :D
