I seriously need help with these.
Some of you might've seen of this game I'm working on. I've been recieving generally positive feedback from the mockups I've posted on PJ. But I haven't posted individual sprites yet.

Yes I know thy're craptastic.

I know how the running cycle goes it's just that when I try and pixel it, it just doesn't work. Maybe it's just the speed, but they look incredibly choppy. And I think Momotaro's legs are too long in the running. Can I please get help on this? I've been trying so hard on this and I'd hate to see this game fail :C

(Did i post this in the right place?)

Mozzy. Don't give up. You are on the right track it just needs some refining :)

Okay. One thing I notice is that each frame is probably redrawn or edited from the last.
To get an effective run cycle, you must plan each leg movement before you jump into the animation.
These are four frame animations so the feet must be in the four 'key' positions:
  • The first two are called extremes. This is where the leg goes out the most.
  • The next two are called contacts. This is where the foot impacts the ground.

So we have a kind of circle:

     3
2         4
     1

The numbers being the position of the leg.

Thats it. All you need is one leg to start animating a run.
Alternate positions. As in, when one leg is up, the other is down i.e. frames 2+4 go together.

The same with your dog. Just alternate 1-2-3-4 with all four legs.

The flapping is a bit different. Plan it the same with extremes and such.

And above all: use references!

Thanks :3

Heres my second try.

I changed Momotaro's run, I'm working on Monkey's ability, which is to stretch out and grab far away poles to pull Momotaro across. Momotaro holds on to him by his tail. I changed Pheasant's flying position. And made Dog's run more bouncy. I'll add in all the extra stuff like Momotaro's hair and hands bouncing and stuff. And I have have Graphics Gale but I can't animate in it for some reason. Can somebody put it together so I can see how it looks? Thanks.

Critisize/help please C:

Maybe you didn't get entirely what I meant. This is a great tutorial that will help you further.

I used 0.2 second intervals and placed the frames in the order in which you have them on your sheet.

mozzy - I agree with BlackDragon. That tutorial was the way I learned the walking cycle, and I don't think it can get even more basic. Try learning the 8 frame cycle.

i would eliminate the second frame of the falling in the jump sequence and use it to make a landing recoil one.
Walking animation tested and working exelent. why not post the animated GIF?

also, the WHIP animation needs to be put in context, or else it would not make sense ;)

I'd post a GIF but GraphicsGale wont let me save it as a GIF.
And the Whip is Monkey using his tail to attack an enemy.

  1. Google and download Unfreez
  2. Save each Frame as Individual PNG files(posible in GG)
  3. Load the frames of each sequence to Unfreez.
  4. Save the GIF image, upload, and et voila. GIF done.
