I've been trying to experiment with hue shifting.  In the past, I usually never bothered trying this, just color ramped like a mo-fo, but I really do like the way some people are able to hue shift and get seemingly very different colors to blend together just so.

This is my first attempt.  I didn't go all crazy on it, but can anyone let me know if I did this ok?  I hue shifted from grey to blue (not that far-fetched), from brown to gold (ok, also not far-fetched), and red to peach (ok, so Im still a bit queasy with the color mixing).

Should I be a little more daring and shift the hues a bit more?

Took a minute to shift the hues even further and bump up the contrast in places, as well as merge a few colours in the palettes. I crushed the hat, it lost some form.

My edit the former, your original the latter.

Thanks Sabo, that looks great!

Yeah, I think color conservation could be on the list of obstacles I need to overcome.  Looking at my palette on an LCD screen, I can barely even tell the first 3 shades of grey apart.  Just in doing that conservation helps with the contrast, since the difference in colors in the ramp is more significant.

I'll have another go at it, try to reduce even further, and perhaps add uh bottul o' RUM. :D

Pirate sprite looks great.
Palette wise, best tip I could give is to let it evolve as you work.
Start off with the main block colours and then add colours when and where you need them.
I`ve found that, after I have my initial block colours, I tend to find my shadow colours more often than not automatically work across the range of hues I`ve set down.
Hi-lights tend to be trickier but you can get away with a lot when it comes to those darker shadow colours.
