Okay, this is more a less a mockup of an animation I want to do with a character shooting a beam attack. Anyone have effects tips or links I can check out to help me nail some ideas into my head. Here is my current work in progress to figure some things out.

now decide yourself, it is more or it is lesss of a mockup.
Check some SHMUPs to see some nice beam/laser effects, or Ryu's Shinku Hadounken in the Marvel Vs Capcom series. also, if you're planning to integrate both character and beam, you should be aware that such attack will have a recoil that will be absorbed by the arm.

Thanks Metaru, I was able to find a screenshot of Ryu from Marvel vs Capcom to help with the look.
I used this as a reference http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h115/cdterney/marvel.jpg I borrowed from ryu's beam and the way his clothes are modified by the blast. The only thing I don't like is how Ryu is unaffected by the amount of light that beam would give off so in my animation I plan on adding that in as well as some debris such as leaves being affected.
The character is just a proxy at the moment so I can help break down the shot a bit more.

Are there any other things that I can tweak before starting that might make this more dynamic?

the beam is a strong blueish light source that affects its surrounding, keep that in mind ;D
