Hello pixel people...
I've started pixelling some http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanafuda - hanafuda cards for a competition
reference (amongst a few others, including Clubhouse Games/42 All-Time Classics for DS):

I will update this as I complete more...I'm not going to do all of them...I'm going to try and do most of the cards with animals:
(Note: These will be printed and therefore are intended to be zoomed at least 4x)

i believe you have to be extremely careful with the colors here. these cards have an internal armony given by the soft colors they use, so using a pure dark outline literraly breaks them.

Hmm...I see your point...however I was also looking at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/157518?size=large - some cards which have more defined outlines too...
I decided to remove the outline on some parts of the backgrounds...especially on the second picture...
and I gave the first birdie some feet :3
... another thing to mention is that I'm planning to cut the animals out of the scene and placing them in front of the bg...making them 'pop out' of the background... if that makes sense...
