This piece turned out to be a bit more challenging than I'd planned, so I thought I'd finally take advantage of this forum.

I was trying to put together something using C64 restrictions and didn't really have any ideas for it, so I just doodled something. Then I wanted to draw a more detailed drawing of the main character.

The original sprites.

This is Sal, some kind of tiny creature summoned by magic or some such. I ended up using the C64 palette for the big piece too. I'm having a bit of trouble with the dress, getting the folds and shading right, and perspective, so any input on either of those would be great.

The http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=6566.0 - Pixelation thread has a few more details about previous steps, if you're interested.

This looks great so far
Looking for things to critique, the cloth looks a little stiff in some areas (though it depends on what type of material you're going for if that's a "bad" thing), and perhaps the chest area is a little hard to read with the arm being the same colour.  I did a really quick edit, but I don't really know if it's an improvement, it's just to give an indication of what I mean (my edit on right):

The main things is that the robe flows out a little more gradually at the back, and that part of the chest is defined in front of the back arm.
Looking forward to seeing this finished!

Thanks!

I was actually surprised by how stiff cloth actually is. And Sal's dress is meant to be smaller than the cloth I sketched for reference, so if anything, it would be even stiffer, I think.

The arm casts a shadow on the chest. Maybe that's not clear enough since I'm refraining from using black to shade the dress? Changing it would be a bit difficult without changing the direction of that light source, I think. Unless there was more ambient light that could illuminate that part, but I'm having trouble enough with these two light sources.

I changed the shadow cast by the sleeve like you suggested. I also changed the back a bit, but I'm not sure if it's an improvement. I want a bit of shadow there to suggest that there's an edge. I imagined Sally as a very skinny creature with a prominent ribcage.

I hope I'm not making excuses, because I really appreciate the help.

Edit: Trying to add some more interest to the background.
