I would like to say, please post your reference. I have seen this image before on a Pokemon Card. Its best to tell people when you used a reference.

Well I actually can't post the refference because the card you propablly saw Is in my collection,(or was i don't play those childish games anymore) but if you can find one on the internet i'd love you for that.

PS I actually found it! I based this on that card but wanted to make him look dieing or somehow exhausted.

Well. I don't think contrast is the real issue here. Not in itself. Though some of the colors are really hard to distinguish, that can be considered a contrast problem. If there are colors you cannot distingush, merge them!

I think the colors are a bit dull. Hue-shift! It's fun, try it.
Stick to the light source(s). I can't decide whether it's in the upper- or lower left corner.

I whomped up a very quick edit (it's 1:05 AM here), dunno if it helps anything. It's a cute line-art, was fun to work with:

OK i see what you mean. In mine I haven't defined the lightsource just did a random shading :( I'll work on it, so get ready for an update.

Sorry eyeball, i may have been wrong. But i am sure i've seen that pose somewhere.
Ive just searched through my card collection, its not there. May have been a pose on the game, or Anime.

De Ja Vu?
I have the same "that reminds me something" impression but I have no trading card... I didn't watch the cartoon series much as well, but I think that pose is typical of japanese animation, you know, animes have stereotyped expressions and reactions...
Well, I may be wrong as well, maybe he has another reference, maybe he is a ripper or an alien, dunno

the image just seems very familiar to lots of people... but lets put that aside....

i think the lines are all good, your problem is the shading and colours, your colour ramp is boring spice it up a bit with differnt hues. also as said before it lacks contrast.

as for the shading very rarely is a highlight on the edge of an object unless it is being lit from behind in which case the shadow will be on the front, or if there is a secondary light source doing it.

also put a bit o selout in there.. never did any harm :)

here is a quick edit by me to show you what i mean...

more vibrant and interesting... but maybe dont make the highlight as strong as mine thats more of an artistic choice... i like makeing things look shiney n squeaky clean :D

-------------

I like shiny things, i do indeed.
