The coloured version looks like it dried up...
The texture isn't right, either, because snail/slug skin is in tsacked lozenge shapes... and it needs to be moist =O

That example helps a lot.

Here are some of your failures.
1) You began patterning WAY before you even had volume.
2) What is with the outline?
3) The example shows proper shading on the belly, it shows contrast as well.
4) I like the line art more then what you have done with the new version.

I suggest you start over, take your colors and just putting them on solid.
Until you've got your volumes figured out don't even dither or pattern ever.
It's just bad practice, and you don't want to start off learning to do it all wrong. :/
