I'm wanting to make a video game (kind of an RPG, in a partial top-down view) in which you play as Jesus.
I'm posting this because I want to make sure it looks good to others before I start animating it. I think the head is still not very good, but I've spent enough time and effort on it that I'm not sure what else I can do about it.

(The idea came to me because of http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/9109.htm - Frario's Jesus submission . I also used it as a reference.)

Due to beard and semi-top-down-ish view, you can't see a neck, but it's there. I raised the head two whole pixels!

Maybe make the face more slender, and de-wrinkle the arms. The arm clothe usually ruffles near the hands instead of where its at on him now.

1) Put him on a cross
I have no idea what you're doing with the AA. The pose is weird, his hands are round? He has no neck, the folds are all wrong.

bearded people with covered necks have necks to! The folds shows upsidedown gravity and his pose is AArg! I am just retyping what souly says -_- Do you have any lightsource? You should.. The colors are ok :), but you have a really big job on the rest before you can animate.
I know that some animators draw an animated stick figure and then draw the character over that. How about drawing a stick figure over this image? It might help you with your animation later, but it will surely help you with understanding the proportions and the pose. (spreading your arms like this is quite hard. Try it for longer than a minute.. your whole arm says: Please let me hang down! please!)

*You need to define your light source a bit more clearly
*Notice how Frario's shades lean more towards blues/purples *The cloth should conform to his body a bit more, right now it looks as if he's stolen a bunch of items and hidden them in various places under his robe
I did a little bit of a sketchy edit:

Gee, this is a lot more responses than I usually get. Of course, I never agree with most things people say. (I really appreciate it, though!)
The face was originally more slender. I couldn't fit all the detail I wanted when it was.
Wrinkles...'kay. Another thing I never do right.
I didn't intentionally do any anti-aliasing in this.
I was told the pose looks weird, like with all my sprites. (Funny enough, I was being lazy when I made the outline, not really intending to make the sprite out of it.)
The hands are round because they never look right when I make them hand-ish.
He's got a neck--at the least, plenty more than he had before. Maybe his shoulders are too tall instead.
No light source. Well, I'm pretending it's an all-directional ambient light source. I think it looks good like that.
I didn't use blue-tinted gray like Frario did because I wanted this to be in a summer-type environment. I figured red would match the dusty ground better.

You've got me there. Mustachified! (I'll do some of the other things later.)

Later: Not doing the wrinkles on the arms yet... Changed the darkest shade, added a split in the robe, and put the arms down at his sides.

Later-er: I read three tutorials about clothing folds and still can't do it realistically. :P

His shoulders are still too high. It looks like he is contracting them. And the beard isn't the problem here. Try adding a real neck, like, under his head, above the shoulders.

I'm horrible at this whole observation thing. I know something's still wrong, but I don't know how to fix it. Anyway, here's my current version:

Edit: I think I'm making it worse again. Heh. I added a shade, brightened the ends of the arms so they look like they're forward more, and I redid the torso wrinkles and his left leg wrinkle.

Way better now. Still I suggest totally redrawing the arms and the legs, you could draw clothes over them later again.
