Am I like the only person here who listens to metal? I'm new to this forum and I checked out the music discussion and almost all of it was pop or soft rock. Am I alone?

No you're not alone. Tonnes of people on here listen to metal, i think.
However it is quite a broad genre.

But more recently I've been listening to more ska then metal. If only I can fuse the two, I'd be in orgasm heaven.

Though wikipedia says it's progressive metal, I say it's just plain rock. Maybe progressive.
Progressive/alternative metal IMO would be something like Mudvayne. Their genre varies.

Never understood why people are obsessed with classifying music into specific genres. Especially with metal, it quickly melts into a "I'M MORE HARDCORE THAN YOU"fest that makes me want to cleave someone in half with an obscenely large battleaxe while attempting to swallow a pinecone AND make as close a sound a goat makes when being sodomized as I can at the same time.
I like metal that isn't senseless (in my ever-loving opinion).
Tyr Pantera Tool (f**k you) Otyg Slipknot Suidakra Stigmata Disturbed
Anything that sounds like crude oil looks and smells is right out.
And for the record, Kiss was originally considered metal. So BWAH!

There's been a lot of non-metal posted here.
Pig destroyer is more grind, which is a different (but awesome) genre.
Static-X, SoaD, Tool, Slipknot, Disturbed are actually alternative rock or nu metal, which is a totally different genre.
Mnemic, Lamb of God and the likes are "mallcore". LoG are very talented for a metalcore band though.
As for death metal, it's more like Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus and Aborted, whereas bands like Children of Bodom In flames (early, everything since clayman is alt/metalcore) are melodeath, which is not death metal.
I'm not trying to be a jerk to people, and I AM NOT CRITICIZING your music taste, but when it comes to music I can't help being a besserwisser. Actually music like Tool and Slipknot has nothing in common with metal except the same instruments, but they are used in blues, jazz, country, rock and other stuff too.
Does anyone here listen to experimental mixes of metal, like folk metal and such? I'm currently working at a comedy centered "pirate metal" project.

Metalcore, and Melodeath are different SUBgenres. This prefix is important. They really aren't different enough to constitute their own genres. Nu metal, however, is a twisted abomination that should never have been thrust upon mankind. And not a twisted abomination in the really awesome way.

Screw you genre-ising whores. As I mentioned earlier, Kiss was originally considered Metal, and they (far as I can see) have no similarities to what you'd currently consider metal. So, really, who are you to say that this is this and not that? Where from doth come your authority?
It bothers me when people appoint themselves authorities of music genres, probably as much as I bother the afforementioned with my merging of band names and genres with reckless abandon.
Why, anyways, are there so many friggin' different genres of metal? It's not like pagan metal and folk metal are ages apart, and ALL those blackmetal/deathmetal/metalcore crude-oil sh*ts sound the same to me...
On a side note, I haven't found much folk/pagan metal I don't like. It either kicks ass or makes me laugh (C'mon, most of 'em have digeridoos and boingy sounds).

Genres don't matter that much within metal, but the stuff that's called metal when it's not is really bad. Labeling Slipknot or bring me the vibrator as metal is like saying the beatles are progressive jazz or rap.

Nope, metalcore is not a subgenre of metal. It's a subgenre of pop-ified post-hardcore. Metalcore is like nu metal, with tighter pants and more hairspray. As well as glam, it's not metal either, it was called that by ignorant dickheads back in the 80's. It's all sh*t if you ask me.

I can agree that Metal labeling is masturbatory. But the people who are against "labeling" genres, are just as bad as those who do. To say, "Man, music is music, no need to classify." would also incline one to believe that Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Friday the 13 movies are on par with Casa Blanca, and Raging Bull. (Seriously, do I need my pimp hand here?) In fact, it's kinda' going against the grain of your very well being! Humans have ALWAYS classified things, for organizational purposes; Some good, some bad. But to say that labeling serves no purpose in music, is just being musically ignorant, and not recognizing that the riffs, melody, notes, time shifts, and lyrical content are somehow identical with each other. Of course, even some metal bands have the same belief as you, as they want to believe their music is unique, and stands out, as is one of the main goals of most musicians. They want to say, " No this isn't Death metal, this is 'Northern Hyper blast metal', or 'swamp metal"...whatever the F*** that means. Humans are smart enough to establish the difference of music, and most noise. Most just feel the need to say their preference is better than others, and THAT'S the problem with labeling. People are fighting the stigma of labeling in that the most vocal ones are the ones who are imposing theirs is of higher quality, when it couldn't be further from the truth; they're just different, that's all. In all respects, I'm more so a fan of Death Metal; Yes, that sometimes involves cookie monster growling, banshee-like screaming and squealing. It's definitely strange to the untrained ears, and it's definitely understandable that most don't prefer it. It's just my thing. I don't wear black gothic giant pants, with chains all over them, I don't believe in Satan, I don't want to shoot or harm people, I don't attend every death metal concert in town, Black isn't my favorite color, I don't do drugs, I don't believe in destruction and pain, and I don't believe it's the best music in the world. I believe that this form of music is soothing to me, and it suits me. From the vocals, the harmonies, the rythmic guitar work, and drum beats, it's all just a beatiful form of music to me, that's misunderstood, and has been since it's incarnation, with the old sad blues music of slaves. I could get into what bands I like, but I find it pointless in this thread, as it would turn into a figurative metal"my dick is bigger than your dick" flame war with bands and what not...
So yeah, if you are a metalhead, than my Corna's go to you...if not, as long as if it's music you yourself love and enjoy, without liking it for the sake of liking it, hats off to ya'...

Pff BOB. Jazz and metal are totally the same thing.
I agree witcha, really, I just like to make noise. The thing I'm rebelling against most, though, is the widespread and inconsistent genre confusion caused by people saying "that isn't metal, but THAT is metal" simply because they don't like "that" but they do like "THAT".
Nu metal is metal. Bastardization though many may call it, simply because it's not of your taste doesn't give you the right to kick it out of a genre.
But, as I said, I'm mostly just making noise. I listen to musics 'cause I enjoy them, but I don't have the mad passion to go and research exactly what they are so I can correct anyone and everyone who says otherwise.
Huzzah! I'm an asshole!*
On an entirely different note, but back on the Folk/pagan metal strain:
Any of you knowledgeable metalheads I keep playfully bashing have any good reccomendations for music that sounds similar to quote unquote folk/pagan metal? I'm a big fan of Tyr at the mo, but a little heavier never hurt anyone. I'm always open to metal-library-expansion, so fire away!
Reifenstahl, also cool.
(* I mean no actual offence to anyone. I'm using this thread as a break from doing the drawing I don't want to do, and as such I'm prone to poking people in order to evoke a response. Though I do stand by my words!)

Why are people so angry? This is an art forum. On the internet. Do people really get mad at what they read at the internet?
Really, labeling numetal/mallcore as metal is like labeling an image with a mosaic filter as pixel art. Music is art, therefore the numetal/mallcore bands are like people who rip pixel pieces or just color reduce real pictures. It takes no talent and it comes out bad. It may seem good at first but then no one cares about it.
Metal is like dogs, there are many types of it, like poodles, retrievers, pittbulls, while numetal is like jackals, they're all pretty much the same. To some people jackals may resemble dogs, but they are totally different.
Thinking mallcore is like metal because they both have distortion and scream is like thinking a mossy rock and a dead squirrel is the same thing because they're both in the forest.
Seriously, leave the labeling to people who actaully know metal and music and general.

Saboteur, don't think I've never searched the depths of Folk metal, heh. In fact, don't think I'll be experimenting in listening to that type of music in a while, lol. So, unfortunately, no recommendations from me. Only one I can think of was some guy from Stockholm(Tony Naima and the bitters, I think?) who did covers of classic Dismember songs(my fav effin' band in the world! \m/ ). I thought it was kinda' fun, quarky, and interesting, especially his cover of "of fire", one of my fav Dismember songs. Anything else, eh', I'm not sure. sorry, heh...
For other good Thrash, I'd suggest Testament, another good thrash band that's lived underneath the shadow of the Metallica, but is still kicking till this day....well, at least I like 'em, I guess.

Fatalis67, you may as well cut it with the sub-sub-sub-sub metal categorizing, and just name the bands themselves. I think we'll understand much better whom you're asking about if you do.
Also, just got "Heaven Shall Burn"s cd "iconoclasts." Though some may consider it another generic Metalcore album, I certainly am enjoying the poo out of it. Great band, if I say so my self.

I like Bloodbath, especially their song Feeding the Undead. I remember me and my friends use to make fun of this one song of their's where the intro was the lead singer making some weird growl, sounding as if he was still going through puberty. Funny stuff. But musically, I feel Vader is a little better. Plus the singer in Vader doesn't try to make his voice sound like the devil, or scream like a punk kid...his voice is easily recognizable, easy to understand, and has some power behind it.

I want to add Halleluyah - God is Dead to that list, not as good as their early stuff but really cool in a different way. There is a link in one of my posts.
Vader are great. But on the vocals there is no comparison to bloodbath. Bloodbath has some of the worlds best vocalists the world has to offer, especially Mikael Åkerfeldt, so extremely well polished growls. Vader has really cool angry, screaming vocals though.
And in the end it all comes down to opinions.

Hmm... Vader is pretty good, but I'll have to say I prefer Bloodbath.

I like a lot of metal. Children Of Bodom, Norther, Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Iron Maiden... The list is endless. I also like deathcore which although most true metalheads hold a massive grudge against it, I enjoy it.
Suicide Silence, Job For A Cowboy, Bring Me The Horizon, etc ARE good.

Bodom, Necrophagist, Cannibal Corpse, and of course Maiden are all awesome. When it comes to deathcore, I do have to say I enjoy SOME. I don't like Suicide Silence, they just don't have a sound that makes me think that they actually know how to play well enough to have a band this popular. But All Shall Perish is the best deathcore band imo.
And @ Skamo, heard of Psycroptic? They're from Australia.
