CHALLENGE: Stock Character Portrait

This week you're challenged to create a stylised portrait of a stock character. The more stylised the better! Make the character easily identifiable as the stereotype he/she is.

Pick one of these stock characters:
  • Wise old man*
  • Mad scientist
  • Pirate
  • Caveman*
You may not use an existing character. For example, if you were making a caveman, you can't just pixel Fred Flintstone. It has to be your own interpretation of a caveman character.

*Even though these characters are listed as being male, you may make female versions of them if you like.
ie. Wise old lady/Cavewoman.

Canvas Size - Exactly 80x80
Colours - Exactly 16
Transparency - No
Animation - No

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp - submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8 - WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Can I put two characters of the same stereotype in the portrait?
Or backup characters? for example a mad scientist and a mouse.

I'd rather you didn't have multiple characters in the image. It is supposed to be a portrait of a single character.
But if you do feel that you need to put other characters in the image you should make it extremely clear which one is intended to be the main character.

I have a BIG problem. I get confused and made an eight colors drawing. I have to add another 8 colors or I can submit it in that way? Please  answer me soon. ^_^ Here is my almost finished (due to the colors) WIP:

Antiboton, the rules state 16 colours exactly- no more, no less.

I'm not happy with your colours either :P
You seem to tend to use alot of washed out warm colours. I think if you open up your palette a bit and experiment, you might find a good balance.

How do you like it now? It's a bit cooler with more of a hue shift in the clothing. Any other advice?

I took a closer view at your image. you actually have 19 colours on that ... hmm. There are 3 colours that are only single pixel. Easy enough to find.
It seems a jumbled mess of random shading. Very confusing to see how you created this. It is, of course, a matter of taste, so I won't go further if you don't think there's anything off with it.

Back to the colours though, there seems to be a huge waste of them. It looks like colours were thrown in just to get the count up to 16. Rethink your colour issue by adding up how many colours could be used for each defined area. Example:
  • 3 for the face
  • 3 or 4 for the robes
  • 2 for the beard
leaving you 7 extra colours to use for the background AND to put some good ol' aa on him. More than enough.

I also suggest taking a look at the following guide/tutorial and noting the hue shift and colouring notes:

I feel like I should say something...

Generally, a portrait is considered to be focused on the face. I won't refuse it if it isn't strictly so, but it will definitely make it easier on you for approval purposes as well as what goes down when voting time comes.

I drew Homo Habilis, the real cave man, he decided to go to the jungle to hunt cuz his girl is getting all the berries so he don't gotta worry about that.

Another reminder to recheck your submissions to make sure that they live up to the challenge guidelines... ESPECIALLY the colour amount: 16 exactly! no more, no less. Your submission can and will be sent back for revision should they not meet challenge requirements. Don't let yourself down by being a lazy bum and not reading everything.
