I've been working on a game called World in War with my team, Skyfire. We did the original graphics over a year ago, so now we decided to try redoing them, since the originals weren't shaded and were perfectly flat. Sokota, the guy who usually does sprites, came up with this:

but I didn't really like his style for this as much as his usual sprites. So I gave it a shot, and made this:

I don't think mine is perfect yet, so I need some C&C on how to improve it. The leftmost one (on both images) is the original. I experimented with the shading on the legs on the middle one of mine (bottom). I don't pixel very much; this is one of the first things I've made an outline for and then successfully shaded. Any help on improving it would be appreciated. Thanks

this to  that

You need less colors and much more contrast.

just from 14 colors to 10, sprites usually require more colors to look nice. You had almost a gradient on your tablet...making it not very detailed just plain. The main point here was to get more contrast (difference in each color) so you can have more pasaz.

I just filled in your piece with the tablet i used. I would not have created the character like that, just replaced the color. Saying this, i reccomend you review this piece and do things like bring out the far leg and things of such. Look at images on google for referance.

Good luck, i hope i could help

EDIT: do not copy my edit, you need to make your own tablet of colors and shading. (i hardly changed the shading)

use this for both pieces....not just the one i made

EDIT2: i was looking at your pixel (the one i edited) and i realize it looks like a man with on leg and no arms, this really needs fixing. Again, look at ref pics...they help alot.

@ShadowCrow:
Haha, thanks.

@volcom:
Heh, mine was the second pic I posted. The first one is the one the team's graphics artist did, and the second one is the one I did to replace it. (The left one on both images was the original original ). Thanks for the info though, I'll be sure to use it on future spritings (if it needs it too). And he has no arms because it is a mouse aiming platform game, where the arm needs to be a separate sprite. But we haven't gotten that far yet, we need to decide on which style to use first.

You still need to apply contrast and new tablet to yours. Trust me, you really need it.

Well, I think you should make some arms first?! 'Cause I really don't see any.
And I recommend that you change the color of the skin in a less-orange color.
Oh and try making the colors a little bit more interesting, just by highering the contrast (but not too much, as I think that doesn't really look well on a sprite) and playing with hue/saturation.
Other then that I like it, it's really cute, well done :)
