By now a good number of you have probably heard of Dropbox, free online storage space.

Basically, the way it works is it gives you 2 gigs of storage space online, to put anything in. The upload and download rates are extremely fast, delivering files in seconds, and you can grab said files from anywhere with their file manager online.

The awesome thing about it isn't the storage space really, the awesome thing is their public folder, and shared folders, along with their desktop syncing.

The public folder lets you publically link to anything you put in there, as if it were hosted on imageshack, or another file upload site. You can even change the file in the folder and whatever it's linked to will update as well, so no need to reupload files.

You can share folders with other members of dropbox, allowing you to pass off files easily. I'm using it in joint projects so that we can update parts and not have to worry about passing around the most recent copy.

Their most touted feature is of course the desktop sync. The desktop sync merges all changes that you make to your dropbox to a folder you pick on your computer. You put a file in that folder, and bang it's online. You change something somewhere else, and bang, all the other computers hooked up to your account have it too. The dropbox sync program has Windows, Mac, and Linux variants, so you can even do it across different operating systems.

Recently dropbox added a referral service, that gives you up to 3 gigs of extra space for referring other people (250 MB for each person that signs up). The best part is that the people you refer get the space too. Here's my referral link, if you sign up under this link, then you can get extra space.

Of course everyone is asking what the catch is. Free file storage up to 2 gigabytes (5 if you refer people, or are referred). The catch is that if you want more space, you gotta subscribe (subscribers can get 6 gigs of extra space for referrals, as opposed to only 3). If you only move around small files like pictures and so on, then 2 gigs is more than good enough, and the subscribers who need the extra space keep the thing running for the rest of us.

Wow, I can get rid of Photobucket and their funkiness.  Thanks for the FYI and expect to be listed as a referrer when I sign up!

Yeah, just a word of warning. If you delete the file in your dropbox, or move it to a different folder, then the file will disappear/public link will change. I typically use imageshack if I want a more permanent solution (why would you use photobucket? It's so clunky, and you need to be logged in, I only use it when I need to upload multiple files at the same time).

Why delete files? Images are not that large... And you just got 250mb more thanks to me..

EDIT: How do I use this as an imageshack?
I mean, how do I upload an image and get a direct link to it? All I can do now is create a gallery, and that even jpgs my work..

Sorry for not being more explicit.

Chances are you put that file in the Photos folder. The photos folder cannot be publically linked to, it exists purely so that you can view the files as a slideshow when you're working in the web interface.

To get the public link a file must be placed inside the PUBLIC folder. Once inside you can get the public link by right clicking it, going to the dropbox submenu and clicking, "Copy Public link"

Here's an image tutorial using the web interface to copy the public link of a file inside my public folder

This is really really good! Thank you so much. Hope you still have room for more referrer bonuses!

Argh, there's a download!  I'll have to hold off on this until I get back on my home system - I'll get killed if I do this at work .

Yeah, the speed is absurd. I dropped a 200MB folder in there, and it was finished in minutes. Like, under ten minutes. It's almost as fast as moving it from one folder to another.

I'm just gonna tkae a chance and also drop my referral link here: https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTIzNDY3NzU5 - https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTIzNDY3NzU5

If you don't have an account yet and you use that both you and I will get 250mb of extra space, so it's a win-win! =)
