Greets!

I'd like to put together a repository of freely-available game art that can be used in open source games, and I was wondering if anyone had any old tile sets or sprites sitting around on their hard drive that they'd be willing to donate to the cause -- it might be a nice way for some artwork that wouldn't otherwise see the light of day to make it into a game.

I'm also considering commissioning art specifically for this purpose, but I need to solidify my plans a bit before I start paying cash. :)

Any takers?  Comments?  Thoughts?  Ideas?  Questions?  Etc?

Peace,
Bart

ADDENDUM: In case you don't want to read all the way to the bottom of this thread, the site is up in beta form.  The link is http://opengameart.org - http://opengameart.org .

There was some kind of topic about this on pixelation a while ago too, and since then I got more and more interested in this.
It would indeed be awesome to have or create a site, where people could post their free to use game art!

I think it would be better if you asked this on a game making forum, or a game art forum.

Though I do have some stuff I may give you, but it's old and generic.

Okay, clearly you don't think much of my idea, but not everyone will.  Again, for the record, I'm not asking anyone to make any tiles for free, I'm just asking if people have old art laying around that wouldn't otherwise ever see the light of day that they'd be interested in donating.  Once things are moving, I'm going to start commissioning new art out of my own funds.

For those of you who are interested in a site like this, I'm going to put something together and then post the link in a day or two when a preliminary version is ready to go.  I've already convinced a generous friend of mine to contribute some of her old art that was intended for a project that never came to fruition, so I'll have some stuff to start with.

If this is something you'd be interested in donating some art to, reply here and I'll get in touch with you via forum message once the site is good to go.

Thanks!

Bart

Gotcha.

Regardless, it's cool that you're allowing indie developers to use your art. :)

All good.  :)

I've been gone most of the day putting the finishing touches on my site and making it semi-presentable.  There are a few kinks to be worked out, but here's the link to the beta site.  If you're up for signing up and contributing content, go for it.  :)

If you run into any issues, post them in this thread here and I'll look into them.

I strongly encourage you to set a creative commons license to your site, asap, and set every single condition on wich resources provided by it can be used. plus, a better browsing system based on previews rather than thumbnails would be way more eficient than resized versions.

I hadn't realized that I wasn't displaying the content license, but I've fixed that now.  There are a number you can select from.  Since the goal of this site is to have art for open source software, every license I made available is one that's compatible with the GNU GPL, which is a license a lot of Open Source software is published under (this includes two Creative Commons licenses).

I've changed the browsing interface a bit.  It still uses preview images, but I've gotten rid of a lot of clutter and extraneous info so it's a lot easier on the eyes.

I'm currently working on allowing audio uploads as well.
