When the Gameboy challenge was running my original idea was to make a Dali platformer since this painting has always looked like a platformer to me. Its even got a blue platform in it. Did not work well with GB color restriction so full color it is. Can't get this idea out of my head so I'm going for it. GBA-SP.

This is GBA-SP. All c+c welcome
Might make this a whole series of various paintings/artists with different platforms. I'm already envisioning a top-down Picasso SHMUP.

I can't think of main weapon for SirReel, the hero, based on Dali himself. A paintbrush seems lame :|

A paintbrush could be your 'basis weapon'. (If you're planning on having more screens/ status / equipment screen.)
Is a clock too obvious of a weapon?

Awesome! Cant wait to see the finished thing.
I think paintbrush works. But maybe another thing people use to paint? I donno.

These are very common things in his paintings. I think a paintbrush is just too lame and I think too many clocks will kill it. Maybe those free-form sticks could be a slingshot weapon?? seems like the best so far, yes - no?

the slingshot is a nice idea... i'd just love to play dali... errr... sir reel (nice wordplay btw ^^)... but i wouldn't completely kick the paintbrush even though it really is a bit obvious... maybe you can use it as somekinda "smartbomb" where sir reel just dashes around the screen and does... uhm ... something with it ^^ those cannons would be cool as static objects where you have to shoot a load of monsters... with some weird cannonballs... or as somekinda upgrade for the slingshot... just can't think of a way to implement the boobies ;-)
------------- it's not the speed that kills, it's the sudden stop...

Slingshot for weapon and eggs for coins are a nice idea.
You could add some monsters with boobs, too.

eggs=coins idea is great, imo

Plenty of enemies to choose from in his art, that part doesn't worry me.
So I was looking at it and it looked busy. So I'm steping it back some. I just threw all the ideas in to visualize. The eggs and slingshot are cool so I'm keeping those. Should the eggs be cracked open?
E: note the pillow shaded cross

That's not actually a bad idea to have the eggs cracked open. Maybe something should come out of it? A giant hand maybe?

Yay for pillow shading.
And yes, cracked open sounds better.

The cross seems totally out of place to me. I'm down with the pillowshading in this case (I swear Castlevania did the same thing), it's just that it doesn't really jibe with the softness of the rest of the stuff, and it looks nothing like Dali's crosses anyway.
I'm opposed to the blue platforms for the same reason. They were better in the last edit. Soft, soft.
Mr. Reel should use his moustache like a whip, much like Earthworm Jim did with, well, his whole body. May not actually make sense in a still mockup though. The dowsing rods used as support structures always stick in my head when I look at Dali's stuff, but I never ever associate them with slingshots. I doubt anyone would make the connection, imaginative though it is :D

The sky and the clocks look great :D. But some issues:
Dali and floating platform lack detail in comparison to other things.
It would be better to have health seperated from the other icons; it is extremely important to know your health at any given time. If it's buried between other icons then it becomes harder to see immediately. Top left is always a good health location.
I think, even though lame, the paintbrush makes sense. Those prong things he used in his paintings weren't slingshots, so it becomes a weapon which makes no sense. Maybe try making the paintbrush more interesting, you could even have a painting palette as a shield etc... Perhaps even give him the ability to cast some kind of magic, but I personally think the sling shot is a bit odd.
The ground shouldn't be that flat, look at his stuff. A lot of his grounds are very organic and/or rocky.
Also, what's with the banding all over the creature =/

The palette shield is a great idea and will work with the brush. I'm also making a parachute thing in one of his paintings for the flying level. For this reason I'll keep the slingshot for now.

The other screens will have more variety and once they work themselves out then I can come back to this screen. I jushated those rocks I had before I threw something up.

In my opinion this is looking great, however thetiles are kinda uninteresting on the 2nd image. Clocks are great, and the character in the first scene looks amazing. He looks kinda odd in the 2nd screen, though, I just don't really like his stance. All else is ace. More screens, please!~

It took me a minute to find the second face. I personally love stuff like that, so I say the more the merrier.
The eggs look to large to me. They seem very distracting, especially on the darker backgrounds.
Gorgeous work as always.

I just realized you were asking which icon for the paintbrush powerup pickup. I thought you meant which would be used for the weapon, which explains my weird comment (I'm kinda slow). I like the palette.

These are awesome.
However, I am convinced that the slingshot-stick should just be a Stick. However, since the stick likes to hold things it could be a tool of sorts, or something that lifts enemies off the ground and immobilizes them.
or he could hit things with it. Cuz its a stick. ;)

A stick is the same as a paintbrush, weapon wise. I had no score in the menu

Thanks guys. Be harsh, call it as you see it.
2 more screens, a Boss screen and a Title screen. I think this will be the Boss ref. Those Elephants are awesome and hero can throw crosses at it.

Fixed some stuff and remove 8 colors. Now that I know where I'm going the next update will have far less colors. 92 now

* Once a year we must all use the Fejer tool on one piece.

I don't like the new elephant at all. That's my favorite Dali piece, and I'll be crushed if you don't use the long spindly legs.
But enough being dramatic and unhelpful! The only thing I can come up with is to maybe change the boss stage altogether to use a darker bg, thus making the aliasing less harsh. Lame, I know. sigh, what an annoying problem...

Oh man, I'm with ya, believe me. If you notice while every screen is a different level I have elements that continue from screen to screen overlaying them for storytelling purposes. The Boss level is light because its above a light color and I had nothing to overlap on that. I can see it being dark and thought about it...for half a second. I'll just have to try it and see. The elephant having spindly legs is important, I agree. I do think this head looks better with the hero. The first didn't seem to match.

Yes, I found AAing not only looked poor in my version, but in a real game you'd never get away with that and so I really can't go with that. It is a mockup with self-imposed specs. I'm going to try making the legs like turning coils. (Like the tree trunk with the clock) I really like that BG and don't really want to change it. I think it captures the painting even if it is really light. The title screen I want very light too.

atm I think that the (spindly) legs just look like a normal elephant on crutches whereas - judging by the horse - in the painting it's more like real but extremely extended musculature... with several more joints than normal... Bones don't bend so straighter lines which are maybe even a little thinner could avoid jaggies to some extent.

Another possibility is to use one of those support-crutch-stilt things, and make the elephant's stomach hang down a bit.

Would be awesome if this guy

I dont really like the new legs that much. They would look much better with those spindly legs.

I think with the elephant legs you just need to make it look less like normal legs on stilts (like someone said earlier) and more like really long legs just by taking the skin color down into the lower leg parts. Heres a really crude edit but you get the point
anyways this whole thing is awesome.

No, its just a mockup for GBA-SP.
So, Dali often painted his wife and he was way obssesed with her so I'm thinking of a name for the game. Since I can't fit her in anywhere, but shes the 'princess' that the hero rescues the best I have so far is mixing her name with his - Leda + Dali = Ledali and to make some sense for the eggs that are somewhat surreal the game name is Ledali II- The Crystal Egg...good enough?
* the II is because I hate graphic text that ends with an i , also because I'll get a kick from all the 'Where's Part1' comments.
