Alright...
I have been a member here at Pixeljoint for a good month or so. I am
CONSTANTLY amazed at the work you guys do and make available here...
Whether on the forums, in the WIP threads, or in the Galleries... Some
of the stuff is just plain good, while the rest is commercial quality.
Amazing. It got me to thinking...
I don't know how many of you are familiar with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._Lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft .
He created the Cthulhu Mythos. Well, he made his Mythos available for
anyone, sort of an Open Source Storyline. If you want to include
Cthulhu-based creatures or entities, it is open and legal for you to do
so...
Again, not sure how many of you have read this one, but " http://risse.tierranet.com/asprin/books/thieves_world.html - Thieves World "
by Robert Asprin is a storyline where several authors worked together.
Each one would write a story, in it they would have their own
creations, characters, ideas, etc... BUT Each story shared several
things in common. As an author in the group you could include
characters that were created by any of the other authors, but you
couldn't kill them or dramatically change their life. Each story was
set in the same city, in the same country, on the same world...
It got me to thinking. Pixeljoint has WEE, and Lil Dudes, and the
Joint... But in the Gallery I see so much work that is 'just for fun'
but is usable. What if...
We create a new section... Call it "The Game" or something...
Anyone can post new pixel art for it.
Only rules would be it has to be 100% original work, and the artist has
to be willing to let his work be used by the members of Pixeljoint.
Then, have a legalese or something at the bottom saying something like, you can use art from these pages as long as:
1) You are a member in good standing of PixelJoint
2) You have received permission from a Gallery Moderator / Administrator
3) You have donated to "The Game" gallery in the form of Monetary Donation or decent amount of Pixel Works
4) You include a credit list of some sort
Hell, you could even program into Pixeljoint a means for members to
click on images like they do for favorites, that would add them to the
credit list for artwork . They could have an option to DOWNLOAD all images (for a fee) that were added to their credits list?
Then you just section out "The Game"...
Create a few different sections... like:
1) Side-Scrolling
2) Isometric 3D-ish
3) Fighters
4) Top Down
Then you could have sections inside each one of the Master Sections for things like:
1) Characters
2) Vehicles
3) Terrain
4) Buildings
5) Equipment
6) Special Effects
This would give all members of Pixeljoint another avenue to post images
to something that COULD be used with a purpose. Also, if you liked
someones creation you could work an a modified version of it without
worrying about pissing them off.
Just an idea I had the other day when I started clicking on http://pixeljoint.com/pixels/getrandom_pixelart.asp - Random Unrated Pixel Art and running across artwork that is in 'the Archives' so to speak. It was upsetting to see so much that will never be used.
If you don't like the idea? That's cool... But I have alot of iso
pieces I am working on that it would be nice to see them used in an
actual project. And there are plenty of programmers out there looking
for artwork for their "games", at the very least you could be tagging
them for a few bucks to help keep this site up and running.
Ah well, whaddayouallthink?
Peace out
