I don't usually count my colours, so I don't know about this. Do I count them manually by straining my eye? does the graphics program count them by itself and I'm just too dumb to know where? etc.
Thanks in addvance

Many programs can count for you. But I assume the program you're using doesn't have a colour counting feature, therefore I recommend using http://www.irfanview.com/ - irfanview . It's just a small download and has many other interesting features too.

Both Photoshop and PSP do. I haven't used PSP in a while but in Photoshop you need to go to: Image > Mode > Index Color... and it should tell you. This only works with images with 256 colours or less though (this should be enough for all pixel art images anyway.)
If you are looking at images with greater than 256 colours then irfanview is probably the best choice.
