So I've done a little bit of pixeling on my own, mostly goofing around while trying to figure out how to make game sprites. But I've really grown to respect pixel art as a neat art form and want to expand my horizons!

This piece is modeled after my own eye and may eventually become my avatar if I like it enough!
(This is my first rough stage of coloring and there is hardly any revision done at all)

Please tell me what I can change and what you like!

P.S. I've never attempted to do AA before and have no clue as to how to go about picking the intermediate colors... any pointers?

Thanks!

For a sketch that's pretty well done. Looking at your color ramps, I think you've got more than enough colors to work with.

These color pairs look similar enough
[_][_][_][X][_][_][_]
that you could merge them together.

Your crosshatching style looks really good. I think instead of adding more colors you could use that as a dithering method. The only thing you need to work on right now is smoothing out some of your outlines. Colors are well done, basic forms of the eye's just as good.

Oh, and keep a backup copy of your original sketch. Sometimes you'll feel that your original drawings are better than your edits. It'll be a good reference, too.

I think you'll do just fine. Good luck and welcome to Pixel Joint. =)

Thanks for the input!
I agree that some of the colors were really similar and could be combined, so I got rid of the "duplicates" down to 10 colors now (including white).
I've also started the dithering process and kinda tried to add AA to the pupil. I'm a little afraid that I over dithered so I decided to post again before I got too far into it.

Here's version 2 that I dithered the crap out of...

Usually, I'm not one for dithering skin, but I like what you did there. Srsly. Hard to believe it's you're first piece. :D IT. IS. SPARTA. AWESMOE.

Thanks for the support, it isn't my first piece ever. I've done some other things but nothing quite like this.

After looking back at my reference, I realized that the shading on the skin around the eye really didn't make sense and the nose area shouldn't be shaded at all. I tweeked a bunch of stuff and redid the eyebrow. I also cropped it a little bit!

Here's version 3

Please be brutally honest and tell me what needs to be changed!
Thanks
