CHALLENGE: Black and White Sprite

This week we want you to make an animated sprite of an original character using just black, white and transparency.

Update: Please make sure your entry is a full sprite of your character. This is not a portrait challenge.

Canvas Size - Max 80 x 80.
Colours - Exactly 3. You must only use pure black (#000000), pure white (#ffffff) and transparency.
Transparency - Required.
Animation - Required. Min 4 frames.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp - submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8 - WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

i seen a sketch on my friends computer i liked it alot so i grabbed a cpy for myself a while back. when i seen this challenge i thought i should do a pixel of that character so i did a face portrait of him. i think i did a good job, i read something someone wrote in the comments on the challenge and using transparency as a color for the design was a great idea.

so i did this, i hope it inspires people with there designs. i'm not sure if this is allowed yet so i'm not sure if i'll submit it or not. anyways feedback is welcome!


please note on some selected themes for this site (like the original one selected by default) you may find it hard to see the transparent color on this design. the transparency color would have its greatest effect as a medium tone gray or something like that.

Oh god, animation. You and I are not friends.

Here's mine so far. Next step is pulling his plasma pistol out of its holster, then firing it in the sexiest way possible. I'll probably change his arm in the last frame so it doesn't go as low, and I can figure out how he should grab the thing.

stitchy , the head seems to be doing an excorist thing, you might want to only have it turn slightly.

This post kinda applies to everyone, but the rules say *exactly* 3 colors.  Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me most of these are just 2.

@kudo, maybe you can give more movement to the rest of his body. It looks very windy, perhaps his ears could flap too? There's plenty that could be added if you wanted to do more. Search around for idle animations.

Also, maybe you could try adding more contrast/volume.

@linx - Black, White, Transparent. That's three colours. Transparency counts as a 'colour'.

OMG I cant deal with this :/
On the gif preview it shows everything fine
but when i uploaded the frames start blending..

I use GIMP to put everything together. Just set the gif file to clear the previous frame.

On my other PC, I use Corel Photopaint, as it's got some nice animation features.

Its running perfct to me now..
btw i think the reason people arent using transparency as a part is prob because depending on some skins it may be hard to see
i have the green one now and i could barely see that you used transp. on the clothing

This challange is a nice one, so I think I'm going to submit something if I have enought time to finish it...
This what I've done so far. Still working on it. Maybe I'm going to add a mace attack animation and something like a poo throwing special attack...
This is quite raw and it's the first time I use GraphicsGale, so if you have some tip or advice I'll be glad to hear them...




@ Stitchy: are you kidding? That sprite is great and it seems to start with a very fluid animation! I want to see the end of it...

Lol, thanks guys. I actually haven't made any more progress since yesterday, ahem. We'll see if I can actually pull this animation off. I didn't think to use the transparency, either, it seems...

@ smk: It's from an anime called Slayers. Very funny, and one of my all-time favorite anime.

I don't know how to not use white transparency in Graphicsgale, so I can't get white to work, so I don't think this is acceptable unless I found out how or somebody kind enough helped me out. :(

click the little dots above the frame.
tick enabled on transparency.
pick the colour picker (just below it)
click the colour on you picture you want to make transparent.

The title is "Black and White Sprite" - check the news post. The only reason it says "sprit" is because longish challenge titles get truncated in the forum.

Hey guys... Maybe this is not the right place, but I'm experiencing this problem while working on the weekly challange...
Is there any way to change the preview's background colour in GraphicsGale? The default one is white and I can't see the difference between the background and the white coloured sections... I've searched in the preference but nothing seems to be useful...

I had got some tips on The Spriter-Resource that the 'wobblyness' of the stick didn't seem to look all that great, so I took it off. Fixed a few other things as well. This piece will most likely not place against all the others, though this challenge is great fun. :)

Thanks NBZ!  Your piece is looking pretty nifty, too. :)

Here's the basic wing movement.  I still need to redraw each frame.

Someone told me it looks sort of like a dominatrix (with the mesh legs), so I might change the dithering.  Once again, feedback would be really appreciated.

Oh Boy... Apparently GameMaker 8 no longer saves sprites as .gif, but as .png, so my 95 frame long sprite can only be save as a comic strip of sorts... 95 frames long. Any ideas on how to rescue my 2 hours of tedious work?

Current work. My first really serious pixel animation I've ever done, and rather happy with it. I might add more to it, depends on what I can think of. I might do some shading, but hard to do with only B&W, at least it is for me XD.  Anyway, had alot of fun doing this.

Looks pretty good MrEon, 'cept for the fingers maybe, they look a bit deformed, maybe take a look at Marios fingers for a reference

Yeah, that does bug me a little. *Shrug* I kinda used my old leather work gloves for a reference which have that sort of pinched look. I'll have to work on it.

Gonna be making another one (transparency as the actual background next time around), at least another one. Wee this is fun!

I have to admit that the hands really look like a spider splicer  However, that wasn't my intention but rather a strange pirate-ghost-like-thing. Spider Splicers got the hooks in their hands, my sprite's hands are the hooks.

I'm stuck with the animation by the way. Never tried to animate something complex like an attack Well, maybe I still manage to finish this..

Which color of mouth is the most effective ?
