Idle animation for Marina from Mischief Makers. Her original N64 animations were made from downscaled 3D animations, making them much smoother and consistent overall, whereas the frames here are hand-drawn and aesthetically closer to something like Astro Boy Omega Factor on GBA.
I wanted to do something different with Marina's default state since directly copying the 'arms up' neutral pose muddied its readability, and at the same time I didn't want to go for the popular 'move the torso up and down so it looks like the legs are shrinking/expanding on the spot' kind of cheat motion. It was a good excuse to practice subpixelling, which I tend to avoid whenever possible; ditto actual animation. I respect actual animators more and more each time I'm forced to do it myself. |
