It's once again time for our ever popular yearly April Fools Gallery challenge!

For those who do not know the rules yet, the idea is to study the PJ gallery of another pixel artist. Look at the techniques they use, the colours they pick, the subject matters they gravitate towards, etc... Then once you feel like you have a grasp of that person's style, create an image that will fool us into thinking that it's theirs.

Don't forget to mention the name of your chosen pixel artist in your description!

Previous April Fools Gallery challenges can be found here: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Canvas Size - Unrestricted.
Colours - Unrestricted.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

"Once you get much past [ 512 x 512 px resolution] you can't tell that it was drawn with a computer. And to me that quality is part of what i want in my drawing, that is what's interesting and exciting to me." - Lauretta Jones, 1984

Instead of featuring a member of the site as we usually do, this interview will spotlight a pioneer of the medium, someone who became a professional pixel artist before anyone knew it could be a career path.

Lauretta Jones began her career as a freelance digital illustrator, before going on to direct the undergraduate and continuing education computer art department at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She then contributed to the field of digital art in new ways as a user interface researcher, finding more intuitive methods for artists to interact with their computers. She currently teaches botanical art at the New York Botanical Garden.

Lauretta also has a special insight into the world of pixel art during the 1980s, when 8-bit not only meant 8-bit, it also meant state-of-the-art. I was first introduced to Lauretta's work by a 1984 BBC program called "Micro Live," which had been uploaded to YouTube. She was kind enough to answer more than a few of my questions.

Canvas Size - Exactly. 64x64
Colors - Max. 16.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

Reddit allows users to create their own communities, and the main subreddit for pixel art has reached this huge milestone. Who even knew that many people were into pixel art?

skeddles aka Sam Keddy have also taken over as the head moderator of the subreddit. I hope to see some positive changes in the sub going forward, and have lots of ideas.

In celebration (in addition to reddit soon to be releasing a big update), we have several contests going on.

As some of you know, 2 weeks ago our community and the Pixel Art Discord server ran simultaneous weekly challenges to pixel each other's mascots. They have recently published their contest's results! Since not all PJers are members of both communities, we have taken the liberty to make the pieces that were submitted available to a greater audience.

You can check out all of their contest entries here!

It's quite hard at the moment to find a place in the northern hemisphere where people are not sneezing and coughing.

Why is that you may ask? Some of us have simply succumb to one of the most interesting and tiniest things that roam our planet; bacteria and viruses.

For this week I want you to display a bacterium or virus. Keep in mind that you don't have to pixel a realistic depiction!

Canvas Size - Max. 200x200
Colors - Max. 8.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.
