Solid pixeling, but the priorities are messed up, mostly because of the contrast/values.

The sprites aren't reading well from the background, same with the HUD. Remember that our eyes are first drawn to the brightest object, which is the object highest in value. Usually that is the sprite/HUD layer.

In the spring version, the BG trumps everything else. It keeps beckoning the viewer's eye back to look at it, instead of the characters or objects in the forground. The function of the BG should be for setting and decoration, which should recede and give the eye some areas for rest.

Love the concept and the overall mood/design. Hope this helps.

You're right, the lily pad is interactable and should have stronger priority than the tree. I kind of cheated on the tree lightening up the canopy in PS to keep the layers readable (before it was similar in color to the grass and blended in a bit, a good testament to the fine line in balancing visual elements.)

As to the texturing, tbh I was reffing DE pretty hard from his work in Americana Dawn. I don't think it stands out too much and is a fun style to mess with while not having to render each leave individually.

I never officially played SoE but I know of it and respect it. It was one of the refs they gave me so I'm glad this is somewhat evocative of that.

Very creative take on the classic, I love the concept. Would maybe like some of that AA on the other blue brushstrokes, possibly  the clouds too. I also agree with the grass comment, the distinction between it and the rocks almost reads as the same.

The tusks on the goomba are a nice touch!

This is great, really pushing GB limitations to the limit. However some readabilty issues in the sprite (not enough of the "black or white" to make it stand out from the tiles enough. Also on the left screen, why does the tree weave around those last two letters? Let the title be bold and on top-most layer.
