Joining again this year because I like SS.

Things I like

  • Gargamel (cartoon/comic version). If you know me well enough, you may have seen this one coming - he is my top pick always.
  • Barnaby from the upcoming game Billie Bust Up
  • Vodyanoy from The Flying Ship 1979. Big blue guy with a hat and white hair. Video clip of him and his song
  • Animals - here are some I like more:
    • Birds, particularly parrots (especially cockatiels) and owls (especially barn owls)
    • Alligators and crocodiles
    • Cute lil lizards
  • Colorful palettes (not neon or excessively saturated)
    • My favorite color is purple.
  • Splatoon
  • Crossovers!
    • Note: If you draw Barnaby and Gargamel interacting together, keep in mind that Barnaby does not like Gargamel (I have the voice clip to prove this hehehehehe)
  • Sushi
  • Fantasy and mythical creatures in general
  • Pokemon
    • My favorite, period: Weavile
    • My favorite out of the starters: Torchic line, especially Blaziken
  • Rain World (no worries about any spoilers btw! I beat all the campaigns)

Things I don't like

  • Toilet humor
  • Shock humor
  • Excessive/detailed violence
  • Drab/dirty colors (specifically: grey earthy tones)
  • Plain old realism (fantasy/cartoon/game characters made realistic is ok)

Eggy @ 1/27/2023 13:51 commented on I'm sorry I couldn't be the son you wanted. I really did try for as long as I could.

I personally disagree with the last sentence. What I believe is not that you failed them, but that they failed you. No one can be perfect, and everyone has a right to be what they want to be. I feel they were wrong to think that it was OK to try to pressure you into being something you couldn't be and to reject you when you didn't turn out the way they wanted you to be. I hope you know that even though your family left you like that, you still have at least one person in this world that cares, even if they have no other means of helping besides letting you know that they have faith in you and support you every step of the way.

Though I haven't had an issue comparable to yours, I do have a father who, to be frank, I think acts rather immature sometimes and doesn't have a good control over his own emotions. His temper is short, and his anger sometimes makes me feel like he expects me to be perfect or to magically know something, and though he still has his good sides and I still love him, he has become a source of frustration that I can't get away from until I have the means to move out.

And about a year or so ago, I was in a similar place as you. Not the same, but I was in a lot of emotional pain because of something terrible that happened. The pain lasted several months, and learning the true nature behind what happened caused me to wake up the next morning feeling hatred and contempt for the person responsible. I can never forgive that person for causing me so much emotional torment, nor forget their act of breaching my trust the way they did.

But the good news? I know that someday I'll be able to move out and live on my own, and I (mostly) healed from the past. And I'm confident that you can heal, too. Sadly I'm not the kind of person who can offer counselling or something similar, but I have faith that you can learn to be stronger than you ever were. There are people out there that I'm sure will gladly welcome you where your family didn't - I certainly would, because the only thing that matters to me is the personality.
And I think you have a very good personality. We haven't really talked, but I really think so.

I wish for your recovery.

Eggy @ 1/27/2023 12:59 commented on Big Bird

Believe it or not, I actually love fried squid. It's by no means the only way I love it though - I've done stuffed squid, squid risotto, and marinated squid if memory serves me correctly. Really, as I mentioned before, it's hard for me to pass up on any dish that includes cephalopod if I have the option (and money).
I actually love fish and seafood in general as a matter of fact. As a kid, I went crazy over breaded crab claws and shrimp-shaped surimi, and anything I see in the store that resembles fish or seafood catches my attention more readily than other foods. The ironic thing is that I don't even live by the sea, and fish and seafood (especially salmon and cephalopod, my favorite kinds) are both more expensive :(

Eggy @ 1/23/2023 01:58 commented on Big Bird

Please don't delete squid. It happens to be my favorite food
I'm not joking by the way. I actually love squid that much. Anytime I have a chance to have cephalopod, I never like to turn it down in favor of something else.
I do agree with fish heads though. Not because of the eyes or anything, I'm generally not fond of eating heads. Too different from what I'm used to. I generally only like the meaty parts of the meal, occasionally other parts if they're done well enough...

Glad to hear that!
I saw your list of likes and the Wind Fish was the first thing that came to mind. I had to pixel that because I knew it would be a perfect match - it's a whale, and it's a bird and a fish (but in name only).

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. I have my own, which are completely different from yours but they're struggles all the same. I hope that someday you can overcome them and be happier.

Thanks for sharing this lovely portrait!

Eggy @ 3/14/2022 11:05 commented on Big Bird

Yeah. I can definitely understand that low color counts are basically what helps to define pixel art, but I also think it's good when a work goes against the "standard" and still works just as great if not even better. I get it when people go "hey this has more colors than you really need, you can trim them down and still get the same result" but not when they go "hey this looks amazing but that's too many colors to be considered pixel art imo". It makes me kind of feel like it stifles the creative freedom of artists that do know what they're doing with all those colors. I don't remember what it was like years ago but I'm glad there's some leniency now.

Eggy @ 3/14/2022 09:38 commented on Big Bird

Tbf, I think rejecting works merely because they have a lot of colors is pretty dumb. I mean it can lead to a mess of a palette that could've benefitted with having a lesser color count... But if it still works even with (and especially because of) a lot of colors, then I can't see why it should be turned down. It basically reinforces the idea that pixel art "has" to have limited colors when the hall of fame literally has images containing a color count so high that had they been submitted today, they'd probably be instantly rejected based on these standards despite the stunning detail and the amount of work that went into them. For me, a high color count =/= bad and it can work if the artist knows what they're doing... Shame the effort wasn't recognized in the same way.

Eggy @ 3/14/2022 03:20 commented on Big Bird

Oh huh is that what happened? I didn't even notice the upload dates. I thought it was a long-time artist and I was wondering why his work was rejected. From the looks of the preview images, at least some of them don't look like they had any valid reason for rejection...

Omg I just can't get over this!!! I'm a HUGE fan of Hero: 108 (in fact I'm rewatching the series currently) and ever since ten or so years ago I thought it was absolutely cool how Pikachu and Mighty Ray just so happened to have a lot in common, from sharing the same number to harnessing the same element.

Eggy @ 1/12/2022 09:56 commented on Big Bird

My biggest concern is that he might've passed away. The idea that he wanted to go fishing kind of reinforces that... I really hope this isn't the case and that he just isn't on the internet at the moment for whatever reason. I miss jal.

Eggy @ 1/11/2022 04:00 commented on squid

I just checked for Pro Motion NG since that's what I use. You can indeed get wide pixels, as a matter of fact you can get any dimension you like; go to File->Project Settings (or press the Settings button in the Create new Project window) and you'll see the Pixel Size option which lets you modify your pixel (and it will affect the canvas too, so canvas size should be 160x200). To get wide pixels you need to set the pixel size to 2x1 like so:

Eggy @ 1/8/2022 13:43 commented on Big Bird

Speaking of, I wonder where's jal. Haven't seen him since 2016. Guy gave me lots of advice when I was starting out. Would have been happy to show him how I've improved... Hope he's doing well.
