Hi, I'm new to pixel art, and I want to learn. Here's a small starter image I'm working on.

I'd like to find a better palette with less colors (and a bit of yellow), find a better sense of light, and add texture.

Or any hint that might help, thanks!

Well, that small picture does not need that much colors. Try first add one bright highlight and one very dark shade. Then add two or three shades if neccesary.

Looks better but horrible with dithering. This small picture does not need dithering at all. :)

The shape and shading is really good, but the colours could use a little work. Right now there are a bunch of sharp angles that can be smoothed out. I think you'd want to either add another colour to smooth the transition more, or round out the angles and straight lines. (Well, unless that's the style you're going for.)

it's kind of too blocky to be a round skull, and too round to be a blocky skull.
You should perhaps gravitate more towards one or the other a bit more

I added a candle, maybe with some more work it can become a gameboy game-over screen mockup?

No, I'm not using references, I guess I should...

The maxilla sort of came loose and was lost, I like to think of it as an old skull.

Cool i'm interested to see how this'll turn out! question:  if the candle's above the head shouldn't it kind of skim over the skull more, don't know i just want to know personally...

I think you meant the mandible became loose and fell off.
The maxilla is the part that the upper teeth connect to.. so without it
there would be no upper teeth is what Cure is trying to say. :-)

I like it, to me with no maxilla and nostril cavities it looks like it has no eyes and just has giant nostrils with teeth underneath...if that makes sense :D
But I think the "forehead" highlighting is a little bright considering the shading on the rest of it. I really like what you've done with the shape of the skull though.

Thanks for explaining about the maxilla, I had it wrong as you suspected.

Back to the drawing board.

No eyes and giant nostrils: I see what you mean, this is great!

On this one I tried and added a maxilla though, and had to rework the teeth. What do you think?

Note that the different elements of the picture are roughly positionned, the composition needs improvement I guess.

here's a quick redraw of the skull, not only does yours not have a maxilla but it's also too squat - not tall enough and too long.
