@ xxmantisxx:
That's not a bad idea, but since I'm so obsessive over even the smallest detail, I found that the most visually appealing technique so far is to use a few cleaned up frames that have been pre-rotated. This gave me full, pixel-level control.

(BTW, welcome to the forum!)

That's good that you figured it out, i'll be looking through the posts i missed, didn't even notice them.

*EDIT*:Noticed that you guys haven't made the most generic thing for a platform game ever, SPIKES!

Forgive the black background, the GIF program i use does that with GM sprites...

I have one, if it's not already solved, (haven't seen all the posts yet) you could have another idle sprite where he stands slanted, tell it if he's not moving and he's on the block, he's on that sprite, much like the newer Kirby games, take a look at Kirby on a slope: http://dc383.4shared.com/img/cM_dX-EJ/s3/0.39771608216048304/Kirby.png.

@ xxmantisxx:
Those are probably the scariest spikes I have ever seen.
For the 45-degree slant issue, I am satisfied that there won't be any problem with slopes of this steepness -- if memory serves, games like Super Mario World were perfectly happy with just a single angle. That means, of course, that I'm off the hook as far as making the engine more complicated, but tests so far have shown no deficiencies in gameplay enjoyment due to this inbuilt simplicity -- slopes are actually quite fun!

Scary? Is that a compliment?

Well slopes are fun, and you're right in the Mario games it's fine but Mario's sprite wasn't as wide as this one, that might change it, as far as slopes go, what do you think about making it possible to slide down them? Like by holding the down button you like down on you're butt? Give it a very nice feel when you do that in a game, and it's fairly easy to code.

It is if you like scary things!

Wilbot won't be able to stand still on slopes, but I don't see the use of an actual 'butt slide', since that would be a bit too close to Mario, methinks.

Just an idea, what would the slopes be used for if not platforms?

If I understand your question correctly, then the answer is that slopes allow for changes in terrain height that don't require jumping to get to. While jumping is the raison d’être of a platformer, sometimes the gameplay rhythm can be improved by this up & down feel when running (as seen in many early Sonic the Hedgehog games). They also add visual variety.

And if that isn't scientific enough, the most important reason of all is that I just want'em, that's all :D

I can see how that would help out the gameplay, and make it have more life, make it feel fun, rather than a chore to get to the top, i like the idea!

I decided to make a rough draft of what the level selection screen might look like.  I plan on adding trees, clouds, flowers, etc to make it look prettyfuller, but tell me what you think :)

Interesting, not what i was expecting, but maybe better, looks very fun, i'm thinking you guys are planning on making a wilbot on this page, and then have him go from level to level as you progress, if not that could be how it goes.

LOVE IT ALL!

I'm a brand new member and just read the entire thread.

I would love to participate in any way possible.

Couple of suggestions, slow down the explosions so we can admire them and have the whale underwater longer.

Also I'm making a website and it would be great to be able to put Wilbot  !Strange Atol on it.

I'll be posting again soon with suggestions for bosses etc. rhino, big cat bear, other robot

I like it a lot RH, totally not what i imagined and totally cool - the only issue here is, if we plan to have seperate levels be on beaches, islands, ruins etc, it'd mean pixelling those to put on there. I'd envisioned a more mario-style top down view of the islands but i really like what you did instead :)

The only thing that does and always has bugged me is the text you're using in the buttons - i think it's be much prettier to just scale up the small font you made :)

The water is pretty cool i guess. The molebot is UNBELIEVABLY cute. I love it, the way that it pulls itself out of the hole with it's little hands is adorable :D

Just read through this entire thread and I'd have to say that I'm absolutely in love with this game.
I wish I could help in any way possible because I really want to see this game finished.

On a side note, maybe someday this game could be brought to a mobile platform
like the iPhone. The unique and cute art style of this game as well as the interesting
gameplay could make this game a huge success.

Looking forward to how this game turns out!

@ Spot, SatTheArtist, JoNaH, & guitarfred:
Thanks for all the love!

@ Robinhood:
Mole is really cute! But I think either the shadow under the nose should be removed, or modified in some way (without trying it myself, my first guess is to shift the shadow over to our left).

My thoughts

I think a cool enemy would be like one of those small block characters  but with tank features, like that wheel belt thing they have and a  barrel on the front of it.
it could shoot little pellets at wilbot and it would be pretty fast, making a tough enemy.

for the title screen, i think it would be cool if you had silhouettes of the bosses later in the game. sort of like threatening shadows and have the wilbot be scared.

I also think later in the game you should introduce another playable character to vary the gameplay.

platformers always seem to be funner when you can choose from more that one character.

anyway, i think this project looks pretty cool, i'll keep an eye on this.

If you wanted to create an iPhone version, I have some iPhone programming experience (making games) and I might be able to help out. Or just give some tips. However, I‘m currently working on a big project which is going to take a while to finish, so it would be a while before I could start. The project looks awesome and definitely has lots of potential.

@Rion, of course there is. There's 8 pages of work on it, lol.

@Everyone working on this project:
Sorry, I haven't read all 8 pages of intense text so forgive
me if you've already considered it.. but just as an idea,
wouldn't it be cool if you had a little bestiary of all the
monsters you kill in the game? Maybe there could be a rare
monster, or in the bestiary it has a little information box about
them. I don't know, just thinking out loud. Adios!

Hey guys, been checking this thread out and just wanted to chip in and say I'd love to do music for this game, if it ever gets that far into the project. Let me know if you'd like my help!

I'll happily listen to any sample music that you post.

This project isn't dead, just the victim of real life.  Please stay tuned.

Wow. I was just nostalgia tripping on a bunch of the first MIDI's that I did for this game back in the day. One or two of them were actually listenable haha. Anyway I just thought I'd check up on this thread to look at the old sprites etc. and bam! Activity! It was meant to be.

This was the game that really got me interested in writing music and it'd be so awesome to see it finished someday. I like to think I've improved somewhat and if you still want me I'd be willing to redo and rewrite old stuff with better sounding instruments and keep working on new stuff for this.
