Think you should show the horizon, to give emphasis to the desolation (that's if you're going for the Australian outback/US middle of nowhere feel) so the road needs to narrow to a point approx 2/3 of the way up.
It would also probably add interest if you made it curve or added undulations as it goes off in the distance.

Google images for 'road to nowhere' for the sort of thing I'm trying to describe.

Looks impressive as an effect, if it's as I mentioned, maybe (anyone feel free to correct me if, as too often, I'm wrong) would look even better lowering the speed of the animation.

Love the car! Super readable! As for the street (which I'm just assuming that's what those two lines are), I think it should go off to the right on more of an angle instead of going strait ahead. Maybe on the left there could be a ditch and a bunch of trees or something?

Possible inspiration pic? http://i.imgur.com/PsIlOMy.png

Nice start with the car though.

@pavanz

Ooo, that looks pretty! Really feeling the stealer vibes.

Those are just my thoughts on it... I'm not exactly a pixel master, just an armchair quarterback

With all due respect, Pringles, I don't think it's any of those things.

The reason this looks more like oekaki (which is japanese for 'drawing', I believe) than pixel art, is because it was drawn like a drawing, or a sketch. A lot of rough lines, like scribbling. The fabric, the laurel wreaths, the hair and that... cape-like thing, hanging on the spear and shield. They all look very rushed, sketched out, and with no clean-up afterwards. As a result, there's hundreds, if not thousands, of pixels in the image that don't serve a function. The skull looks like it was drawn in thirty seconds, it's just a rough outline, like a cartoon skull, which makes it seem out of place next to the detailed face on the right.

Dithering has nothing to do with it. There are several perfectly good entries to the challenge that have no dithering or such small amounts of dithering that they would work equally well without dithering. And you don't need more colours to show depth. There are some areas of the boy's head which show good depth, such as where the jaw meets the neck. That's just with two colours.

The "cleanup afterward" is what I was trying comunicate but failed at. What I meant to add earlier was that when I look at other challenge threads lots of people start with sketches like his and that's like... A part way mark... So like this is only half of the process and he totally skipped the huge process of refinement.

To me dithering FORCES someone to edit and refine an image at a pixel level, so telling shadowfox to dither is just telling him one way for him to refine the image on that pixel level.

I never meant to imply that dither equals pixel art or that a piece ISNT pixel art unless it has dither, but you'd probably agree that almost every piece that's as large as the one shadowfox made, makes use of dither.

I'm just trying to make suggestions on how to turn his work from Oekaki to PA rather than giving the blanket "it needs more work". Dithering is something specific that he can do to work towards refining the image. As for my suggestion about shading, your right it probably would do nothing to help it towards PA and you're totally right about all the rough sketches and such.

In that case, we're in agreement. Although most people who are new to pixel art tend to spend too much time worrying about dithering, IMO, and it just looks bad. In my mind, it's not a technique for beginners. Of course, the weekly challenge is as good an opportunity to learn as any!

Pavanz, there's no easy way of saying this, so I'll just come right out and say it. I want to have your babies.

I really love the way the sign lost power before the event. Maybe you could have other, smaller lights that go out at the same time?

Also, I'm sure you've already considered this and rejected the idea, but... well, you could always do something like this too.

kinda late, but I made a map of the possible colors with corresponding dither patterns

I thought my icon would have made it a bit more obvious...

I'M A GIRL
FEMALE
CHICK
WOMAN
LADY
SHE
HER
DAME
MA'DAM

Just thought I'd make that clear...
My name causes confusion regarding my actual gender, I'm female.

@Shadowfox: Whatever. Jalonso told me he was a girl for years, and when we finally met each other, it turns out he's an old man.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

@7heSama: What skeddles said. Also, you may want to make it half the size, or you may run out of time.

I really like the animation and the concept for this image. I don't like the face, at all. I think it would be easier and more interesting to contrast a rigid, stylistic face (maybe some straight lines enforce the really boring, lifeless expression) with a more organic, complex style inside the head.

Meh, I'm just handing out random ideas here. I guess a more general suggestion, without telling you what to do, would be to decide if you want to move more towards photorealism or more towards a cartoon-approach. Right now, you're somewhere in between, which I don't think looks very good.

PS: The third image was just a sloppy illustration of using the brightest bone color for the face, and using the darkest bone color to AA and make a softer transition from bright bone to the dark red.

Yeah it does, I was trying to copy ADrawingMan's technique w/o it being /too/ blatant so I had to put my own spin on things ... also the Torii is supposed to be burned, so I thought it might kinda look like that. I dunno man.

CELS: Definitely too big, plus the extended wall was just kinda boring, so I changed the size.

Pavanz, Tarius: Looking good
