Hi Garreth! On behalf of the little family that's been growing around Robinhood's terrific project, I welcome you, and feel honoured that we have snagged your first post!

:)

That loop is cool and sounds very video-gamey.

Hey, have you read what's been said about possible musical directions for the game so far, and checked the links to all the examples? I'd love to know if you agree or disagree on anything said, and what your thoughts in general are.

I'd also love to hear more of your tunes, if that's alright! (they don't have to be used for Wilbot if you don't want, I was just really interested because I liked your clip!)

Thanks!

To be honest I'm feeling a bit intimidated. I don't want to make this game too full of music.

It seems you have more knowledgeable people already.

feels like i havvent done anywhere near enough to be bothered ressurecting this, but anyway, ive not written much new, but ive been finishing off bits and bobs and i want to get all the ones ive done finished before i continue:)

termites
http://midishrine.com/midi/39153.mid

added a bit of square at the end, finished it up so it should loop nicely. i dont know if it needs another section? i think its alright as is, but its hard to tell how repetitive it will be:) guess thats what happens when i write without a target length:)

Title
http://midishrine.com/midi/39154.mid

even less added here, tbh. especially since its just a menu/titlescreen thing:)

Wow, alot of text for very few updates. NC, and indeed anyone else, please, id like to know whether you think they need anything else:)
hopefully ill finish up some more later/tomorrow:)

The new stuff for the termite mound song sounds great so far, and I like the title song, too -- looking forward to the 'some more', also -- thanks!

(as for how long they should be, or if they need more parts, I would say if you can give each song at least three distinct sections, that ought to be enough for now.)

I really like the new stuff that ice outdoor v1.1 breaks into. My only nitpick would be that the cymbal crash is an unpleasant/unconvincing instrument -- otherwise it sounds right on target.

Imo the music should be more happy, as the characters are very happy (lol)
More of a personal preference maybe

@Finoli, i get what you're saying, but we decided on music with more depth some time ago. there are some whimsical happy pieces though (see title and celebrate)

@ChrisButton - Runescape? ive never really listened to its music! is it any good?
Also, thanks for the compliment - it means alot!
And ,yes, it is in F minor. Gotta love F minor. Such a forlorn key...

@Gamer36 - sadly, no, its not out yet. However, as you can probably tell from the 7 pages of text, its well on its way. There was a bit of a hiatus back there but ive got alot more free time again now my spanish exams are over, so i hope to work on the music till its done.

thats all for now, folks ;)

EDIT: having completely completed Brotherhood in its entirety, i just thought id share how aswesome its soundtrack is:

Assasins Creed - Ezio's Family

Obviously its alot more epic and, frankly, good, than i can really do, it's still stunning. If you dont love the bit where that really high viola comes in you have no heart. ;)

hahah! I'm glad I've found someone on this site who knows musical theory!
Runescape music can be both good and bad I suppose just like all music,
but midi is midi so the instruments sound the same as yours :-D
OH and a heads up for you! If you guys are making the game in Flash then you have to convert midi into something else like mp3 for example. Flash can't support it. Makes me wanna write something knowing someone else out there can do stuff on this site!

That's so awesome you should just rip-off their song and make it 8-bit ;)

@Chris Button, its being coded in GML, so it exports .exe and it can handle midis just fine, but thanks anyway.

@Finoli- Thats actually not a bad idea....

That can be the music when the character dies or sometin like that. I'm pretty good at makin music too so I'ma go try something out right now.

I'm not that good at it so don't be surprised if it is really crappy.

I noticed, seeing as you mentioned the 'Ezio's Family' track earlier.
I also have that song, it's probably my favourite of the AC2 soundtrack.
There's another song I like, I'll get back to you when I find out the name
because I only have Ezio's Family!
Working on a little something, it's not 'game' music however. :-)

I made the music! Idk how it would fit in with the game but... Eh. Here it is:

EDIT

Fuk... I can't upload to myspace cause GarageBand can't save it in a format that myspace can use...

EDIT

Got it working. Here it is:http://www.myspace.com/ebot24/music/playlists/gamer36-s-playlist-1585338

Sounds good! But yeah, it wouldn't fit very well into the game. That's the challenge for musicians, you can't just make music, you have to make it fit into the scenario. :-D

Somewhat related, and possibly of interest:

YoYo Games, the creators of Game Maker, have extended their engine so that it may be run on iOS (iPhone, iPad) devices. Support for Android phones is under way.

Although it is not possible for us developers to create mobile versions of our games ourselves independently, we will soon be able to submit our games for YoYo Games to review. If they see any commercial merit in it they will help polish the game for mobile release and do a 50/50 profit split with the developer(s).

In short - although you won't have a Flash version of Wilbot, with any perseverance you might just be able to push this onto the smart phones, and even cash in on it a little.

Oh joy, a new enemy!

I'm really sorry about the inactivity, life happened, high school application stuff, and my computer broke for a while, and my dad just got it working, but he's still making repairs and it might be a little bit longer before I get it back for good.

But yeah.  Kamikaze Bot.  Like's to be emo and blow up in your face.  Explosion animation will be same explosion from wilbot's death animation.

Slick looking animations. I like the old-school look with the more modern-level animations.

As a personal aesthetic preference, I'd like to see less green in the final thing. I just don't like mass fields of green, or green & purple as a color combo. Maybe some warm colors in other worlds to excite the mind.

That new enemy not only looks cool, it'll be great during gameplay, too! (it's also real cute!)

I love it.

(p.s. If you need a way of rotating sprites that does a much better job than GIMP, check out 'RotSprite' -- it's quite impressive.)

Ah thanks!  I've downloaded the program... The demonstrations look pretty nice ;)

Anyways, I think we have enough enemies now... I'll finish up whalebot and erm... Anymore enemies I didn't finish?  I think I was going to revise the panda guy...  Gosh it's been a while.  I'll try to find all the sprites and some other stuff and get organized when I have some more free time.  Aaaaand make another to-do list.  You hear from walrus?

Organisation sounds great to me; here are some links that might help you:

TO DO List.
Monster Design Doc.
(and here's the post with your animated croc bot)
Main Design Doc.

Though I hope you can devote some time to more mock-ups -- I love the ones you've made so far, and they really help guide the tone of the game and even level design. (the last times I can remember that we talked about things that might go into zones were here, which was mostly about music but might work for level ideas too, and here, and here at '2.12' where I mentioned some tile ideas you might still be interested in.)

No, I haven't heard from him recently.

@ bannanawalrus, I trust you are well?

S'all for now.

I'm good thanks, kinda trailed off on this cos' i wasn't sure what stage it was at or if it was still going on.

I've been busy with some pretty hectic personal stuff, and also having to learn spanish in the space of a little over a year (goddamned GSCE's :/), but i've still been composing on the side, so i'm ready to leap back into action :P!

Also i agree we have more than enough enemies for now, the only things i can think of is a fire boss and an ice boss, and maybe some fire enemies, but we dont need those until we get to that. We should probably start designing some levels soon?

Good to hear from you BW -- hope your Spanish is coming along well.

I look forward to anything you feel like submitting (I really like a lot of what you've put out so far) as long as you're still okay with the same kind of 'nitpicking critique' that works so well for pixel art?

p.s. I hope to hear more like termites v1.0 ;)

Today I randomly decided to have a listen to bananawalrus' ice outdoor
song. The end of the URL is 39169, but I decided to type it out instead of
just clicking the link, anyways I put an 8 on the end by accident and this
is what I got LOL.

Cool explosion, RH -- and looking forward to the whale. A mole should also be really cute. Here's where you posted your first take on one, and I'm also curious about what you think of my suggestions about it here.

Whale... I'm going to make the peak of the jump a bit longer, but I made it at 12 P.M., so it's definitely not my best xP

Also... Just made some HP bar designs.

Which one do you like better?  Green interior, or blue interior?

I personally like the health bar with the blue interior more, although I'm
not fond of the decreased health bars because it looks like the ends are
chopped off kinda! :-)

Also, is there a reason the whale disappears at the end of the animation?

I like the whale, but just like you said, the peak should hold somewhat longer.

The blue interior one looks good, but I agree with ChrisButton, would change something about the end of the decreased health bar :)

Back again!

Currently Termites!, Ending, , Celebrate and Title are completely finished, methinks.

I think i've more or less finished up Volcano too, it just needs a little crit and a spot of tweaking/tidying i think, if you like what i added that is (if you don't, as ever, tell me) :) The bit before the quieter section should be maybe 2x as long, but i cut it down so you could get to what i added faster. Or maybe the riff that plays in the quiet bit could repeat afterwards but over the louder section? Idk.

Volcano

ALSO, i've been busy just generally writing whatever comes to mind without any real purpose, and here is one of my favorites which you're free to use if it fits :)

Misc song 1 (you may need to up your volume, the recorder is a bit quiet, for me anyway)

Edit: Also, blue interior, and make the end the same as the end of the full health bar. Nice whale - do we have a splash animation? I can't remember. :)

It's Anvilstudio, it's free, easy to use and comes with about 200 mediocre MIDI instruments and no capacity to add more or use any effects whatsoever. I'm saving up for FLStudio and a midi sequencer keyboard thingy ;)

Edit: I changed the instruments a little on Ice Outdoor. I think i prefer the new one but i'm not sure. It's not alot of a difference anyway. Thoughts?

Ice Outdoor v1.2

And here's the old one: Ice outdoor v1.1

Also, if you want i'll have a hunt around for sound effects if you can come up with what we need. This could be useful.

I found another WIP song :D it was originally for something else but it wasn't used so i thought i'd post it here. Obviously it's only the melody but i think i can spruce it up a bit if you like the vibe.

Hey :) Just an update, i've been experimenting with LMMS, which was reccomended to me by superjoebob over at the gmc as a reasonable free alternative to FLStudio. It's really good, it supports most VST's, and it comes with a big library of pretty nice synths. I might do a bit of a remix of termites into something a bit nicer than the boggo square and saw that anvilstudio offers.

@ bannanawalrus:

Volcano 1.1 (41220): I quite like the new stuff you added for the song. By 'quiet bit', do mean the section from about 32sec to about 48sec? I think I do prefer it on its own, but it is very cinematic, the type of thing that would play during an event, rather than just being a normal part of a level song's repeating loop -- however, I don't know yet how much the music should 'groove' in the background (so that, whether the player notices the music directly or not, it doesn't actually interrupt by standing out suddenly -- sorry, that's probably making too much out of a subtle thing) without some testing (re-listening to the Klonoa Phantomile soundtrack maybe?) but for now, extending the section before that starts would probably be a safe compromise!

It also sounds like you lessened the bounce between the left/right speakers at the beginning, but since I really loved that, perhaps for a compromise an even better effect than actually leaving alternate speakers entirely would be to sort of change the sound scape to seem quieter (an effect like this is used in many pop songs to make the singer sound like they are using an old-time microphone, or are being played through an old-time radio or 'grammaphone', and I quite like it in sparing amounts). But I loved the way it switched 'up' and 'down' (juxtaposition is something I really like in music -- and I guess so do people who, for example, put things like sudden falsetto into their songs) and it would be cool to keep the effect. There's a nice 'quieting' effect at the end, which I am guessing you achieved by dropping out some of the instruments or whatever, and that sounded good, too (though I don't know if a looping song will take some of that away, since it won't actually be the end anymore...).

Misc song 1 1.0 (41221): This has a nice Eastern feel to it (pentatonic scale, maybe?) and I quite like it -- a lot of promise, and definitely evocative of place. Maybe underwater or some kind of ruin -- what do you think?

Ice Outdoor 1.2 (41238): The new opening is, I think, much prettier (was it changed to a harp instrument?) but I don't like the cymbal crash sound (sounds a bit like a 'baking sheet' or a bin lid) and the instrument that comes in at about 48sec is far too sharp for me. At about 25sec, it goes into a slow bit, but I think it hasn't had the dynamic part it broke into for long enough yet -- it makes it feel a bit unsteady to switch gears that soon after 'breaking out' -- though I do really like how it comes back quite strong after the slow part. But if that wasn't esoteric enough of a critique for you, I also think the drum track doesn't have enough of a comfortable, 'ambling' rhythm. Yeah, that's me, makin' it easy on ya....

Relax 1.0 (41264): This difinitely was relaxing! It has a very sweet, lullaby sound to it, so I do like it, but if it can survive a little impolite manhandling, the only place I think of that it might fit into the game, off the top of my head, would maybe be a beach-type level? I wouldn't want to force it into something it wasn't meant for, though, so what do you think?

And good luck with LMMS!

Yeah, the longer 'wait' of the whale looks better! It should probably pop up to the top a bit faster, though?

@StraightBit - I get what you're saying, but I can't get the gear to rotate correctly.  You can look in the earlier posts, it doesn't rotate smoothly.
Thanks ;)

You guys say you were using GM? Why not just use the image angle command?
