Well frankly orange it doesn't convey anything. It just seems to be there. It doesn't add to the mood, or make the peice any more attractive then it already is.
And here are the noticable problems I see in it: -The BG uses two different dithering techniques. -The change from (666666) to (5F5F5F) is much smaller then the change from (3F3F3F) to (5F5F5F). An even change between colors would make it feel smoother. -The light source on the crate is miniscule, so why should the BG have such a strong change from light grey to dark grey? Also, why is there a black line on the crate? The man's head could also be a little more like a circle. Anyway, I like your animation orange. The smoke after the explosion is also impressive.

So do you think I should just remove the darkening grayness completely? Or replace it with something else?
It's 46 frames, btw. Edited by orange08 - 20 February 2012 at 6:41pm |

Here's my concept. After missing the deadline on a few of these comps, I decided to just *nearly* finish and then post for any comments.
The Brainwashing Room: ![]() I really wanted to do a PR rainbow effect after I read the guidelines, and the bonus challenge. It might fit under "sound waves", but I think it works well as a surreal type of sound. I may shade the character with gray, but it will probably stay monochrome. Open to other people's suggestions, though. This is a larger size than I usually pixel at. |

Maybe it would be better if all the guns would be visible all the time and there would be just fire and more light from randomly firing guns. |

Here is what I have so far. It's meant to be a noisy house party. As you can see, most of this is placeholder art, although the finished image is unlikely to be too much better. Black and white for the backgrounds just now and grey for the foreground. I've red where necessary (like if someone had their arms folded for example).
I'm thinking of using paler secondary colours for the scenery and brighter primary colours for the people in an attempt to stop it looking too busy and a bit less pants. ![]() |

I think I'll make the finished one quite bright though to draw attention to it (and more juke box like!). |

Wow, all week and no comments? You guys must really hate my piece...
I submitted the finished version here, since nobody was commenting anyway. Let me know if I missed something. Finally got one of these done under deadline! Hooray! @philippejugnet: I am astounded at the way you make pixels seem painterly. Your style is fantastic! Compositionally, though, maybe add some flying "sound monsters" from the other two players? (I think I see dragons in the base player's energy cloud) @snader: I think you are being trolled. He's just fading to the original reference image. @d-p: I had the same problem as Mngwa. I thought they were LED lights on a circuit board at first glance. Maybe I've just been spending too much time around computers? @marquandDance: I like the concept, and the execution. One thing, though - the star in the bedroom window seems to be animating oddly (there's a noticeable jump at the wrap point). Maybe have one frame with a blank window, so we know the star left and didn't jump to the right. |

Sorry if you've been made to feel that way, I was so focused on my own entry I didn't think too much about other people's. I actually like what you have, and my initial reaction to the challenge was to think of the "The Scream" which I think is quite similar to what you've done. I don't think the star really needed animated at all but I went a bit animation mad in the final stretch. I hadn't thought of leaving a blank frame though, so I will keep that move in reserve for the next time Gratz on moving up in pixeling size, as you can see I'm still working on %800 zoom so I realise it can be daunting! |

You seemed to have missed my joke somehow (it's obvious in my edit-over). No one can repeat a drawing with that many similar lines in one piece and call it their own. It's just not possible. Any person with basic art knowledge can tell you the same thing. And not to mention that this was supposed to be a challenge! This is like.. snader's third.. fourth time doing this same type of thing, here. Guess it's ok until your hand is caught in the cookie jar by the right person around this place. Dumbo, must you really instigate forum arguments? His piece used a reference that is common knowledge to most, he was in no way being deceitful. Making a movie reference pun on the challenge's title is hardly being a cookie stealing hypocrite. Derailing a thread with drama is not acceptable forum behavior.

@marquandDance: No worries. I was just kidding. It's my first 100x100, which isn't really all that big, but I guess I'm making some progress...
@dumbo: Didn't mean to offend you. I got the joke, it was just a bit trollish. As in sarcastic. It's clear snader hand-pixeled his version, though, so I don't see your objection. Yes, he used the reference heavily. But he's made his own decisions for clarity at a pixel level. Also, it's a WIP, so I don't see how you can make a judgment call about it not being art so early on. I guess I just have to assume you're trolling me now... @philippejugnet: I just mean it has a certain visual quality, like Braid. A great style to have! And it certainly looks very hard to do in pixels, as you have to dither and use other techniques to compensate for the low color count. I'm a fan. |

Originally posted by cure Dumbo, must you really instigate forum arguments? Wait...I was called a "troll", here. I called him (snader) out... once.. again on his form of art (tracing). Bottom line! No argument, man. Deal with it (cure)! I knew you'd be the first. In fact... I love it! Even had a Art Professor friend of mine look at it. I feel no sympathy for snader in the end. Good luck in the art community is all I say, man. He meant this to be a joke, REALLY?! He admits to working on it for a half an hour. He also has other pieces on his other sites that show the same thing. I love that it happened actually. You can't take THIS from me! I just can't AGAIN.. believe it happened soooo fast! Thanks, snader for that! That many similar lines can't be coincidental!!! It's just fact. ![]() "WINNER!" Edited by dumbo - 26 February 2012 at 3:30pm |

Do you want me to show the actual lines?! Good for you here (didn't work). What about the shades (all over), his hairline, sideburns lines, jacket seams, etc.? Funny how you missed soo much. Hope that works out for the both of you in the future (which we shall see I guess). Complete challenge here! He didn't even credit the picture I found from one of my favorite movies. Just type in ... Why are we yelling... in Google (screen copy). And the second pic (in images) will lay over his piece beautifully (REALLY)!!! And your Alabama college degree beats me out on all things as well it seems here. Guess tracing is taught there (or how to change it just enough). God bless you cure. @SlamBlasta: heheheh... that was brilliant.
@dumbo: Your name is starting to seem very applicable. cure may be blunt sometimes, but his points are most assuredly valid. I feel like you aren't grasping the argument we're making here. 1) Not saying snader didn't use that image as reference. He obviously did. Artists use references. Get over it. 2) Tracing is a different term when applied to pixel art. snader did not pixel-for-pixel outline the original image scaled down. He used it as reference, and made parts more readable at the scale he chose. Notice the tie looks more tie-like, the upper teeth, the glasses? These were all modified to match the scale, and added snader's own creativity to the original reference. This is the essence of all art. 3) Physical attacks are not a counter argument. But seeing as you don't seem to understand the first thing about pixel art, I can understand why you went there. ...Damn, trolled again. Can you just take a sick day and stop polluting the thread? |

@Genius At Play: I'm not the best person to answer (I'm pretty new here), but looking at your gallery it looks like you double-posted it. Maybe delete one of them?
You used your reference directly (down to the wall shading...), but I can see the effort you put into making it work in pixels. I don't think the content of the piece is stopping its approval. Lastly, I just got mine approved after being submitted for 1.5 days. It could just take some time. I'll bet all the challenge submissions get approved right after the challenge ends. It's in the queue, so everything seems to be working with the submission. |

It has a timestamp of 2/26 on the file, so I'm pretty sure you're fine, regardless of when it is approved. I think I've even seen some people edit the image after the competition is over - as long as their first submission was in under deadline it's fine to add finishing touches.
...Don't quote me on that, though. I've only picked up on that through years of lurking, and it may void your entry in the comp. |
