household use?
Could I make my synthesizer? Most synths are in peoples homes with their computers, like a piano would be be in rich peoples homes back when. Its use is making music at home if I'm ever good enough to gig with it only then will it leave.

Happy Fanta is happy
Still very WIP.
I decided to do a fanta bottle...because fantasy...Fanta...get it!?? I'm hilarious...anyway, I added a face, because I thought doing a bottle of fanta wasn't really "fantasy" enough. And y'know giving stuff faces instantly makes it fantasy.

Edit:

hmm maybe a bit too dithery/purpely now
Edit:

ditched the purple :(

The fanta bottle is cute but is is iso?
|
Posted By: Blueberry_pie
Date Posted: 21 October 2008 at 12:35pm
Yeah, it's hard to tell with cylindrical objects. Maybe you could pixel it laying on its side to make it a bit more obvious.
|
Posted By: skamocore
Date Posted: 21 October 2008 at 4:57pm
if you're interested, this is how I started out making the bottle.
So it does fit iso perspective, but I can also see how it can very easily be seen as non-iso. Also, I tried making the face and the logo on an angle so it would be a bit more clear, I don't know how else I can make it more obvious whilst keeping it upright. I don't really want to put it on its side, I think it would just look stupid that way :(

Just because it fits in an iso grid doesn't mean it's iso. The cap (circle) is out of perspective.

meant to be a steampunk Toothbrush, but the head is kinda.. buggered up. C+C, on how to improve this would be good :D

PixelKiwi, I'd probably say no. I don't think anyone would consider a vending machine a household item...maybe a fridge?

I'll do a seat by Lecorbusier, because even if is a modern design item, this seat is very used in Sci-fi movie or games, for example assassin's creed ..

@Ska: The face and label on the bottle is out of perspective(they seem to just be side-on) Other than that, it looks very nice.

this is a sad challenge/thread.
I think most everybody neglected to actually READ the challenge.
Firstly, it requires you to pixel a household item. Household item, meaning something you would use in a house. I would consider: a phone, a vacuum cleaner, a fridge, a dishwasher (any appliance really), etc
I really don't think these items can be considered a household item: a bottle of pop, a cat, a poster of cats, etc.
Think about functionality and how it could be transformed into another reality. Perhaps even an alien version of the object. How would a refrigerator function in a world without electricity and instead have to rely on the power of a steam engine? Use your imagination not a simple way through the challenge.
On that note, I think that Quake's toothbrush shows promise while skamocore's bottle of pop lacks purpose in this challenge (though visually appealing - you should submit outside of the challenge anyways).
On the subject of isometrics: I honestly don't think it's that mcuh more difficult than any other form of pixel art. It is only more calculated than anything. Peruse the tutorials listed on the main site and the links available as well and it should be a clear as water what one should attempt to do.
Good luck to all!

I would argue that Fanta could be seen as a household item. I have checked and I can't find a definition of exactly what a "household item" *is*. But I have done some googling and there are many sites that refer to cans and bottles of soft drink (pop...or whatever...) as household items. For example http://www.tipking.co.uk/exercise_equipment.shtml - this , which claims that bottles or cans could be used for arm exercises, under the title of "Use household items for exercise equipment".
The way I see it is that household items could be any inanimate objects that people would generally have in their house (yes, this is a *very* vague definition, but 'household items' is a very vague term). People would generally keep drinks in their fridge, an item you listed as a household item. I would agree with excluding cats from bring household items, as I don't think animals could be considered 'items'. However, I think I would accept a poster of a cat as a household item. A vending machine, as I said earlier, wouldn't really be considered a household item, as I think it would be too much of a stretch of the imagination to think that people would keep vending machines in their houses. Also, they are clearly not designed to be stored in people's houses.
With the 'fantasy/steampunk/sci-fi' criteria, I believe a sentient bottle of Fanta would technically count as fantasy. I do agree that I haven't taken the bounds of this criteria to the fullest extent, but awh well...I was originally thinking of just having a faceless fanta bottle...since Fanta is short for fantas(ie/y). In a similar way to Adarias's food warrior being based off a character from the movie "The Warriors".
Once again, it would be nice if the author of the challenge would clarify what is acceptable and what isn't. :(
tl;dr: I think I'm perfectly within the rules here, and believe me, there have been far less fitting stuff submitted to weekly challenges...

My bad then, I hadn't realized this was your intention with the bottle. Might I then suggest that you animate it (simply even, with a frame or two) transforming it from a simple bottle to an ominous imp rising from the top. Something interesting like that rather than a simple smiley face. Be creative! I know it's in you :)

Pretty cool. Is it a tow behind generator for your carriage? Maybe brown down some those blacks on the main boiler thing? Also, what's the scale here? Is the outlet supposed to be the same size as a modern outlet? If so, does it really need 4 wheels, and not a handle on top?

wtf! This site IS for fun and creativity but this week's challenge, like every week have specific rules applied to the challenge. There is no need to apologize. Just read the rules before joining in, no? Say you did make an error in reading the rules and someone or even many point it out its nothing to insult/diss you or anything, just pointers. At no point was it said or even remotely suggested that you were terrible. I will however go out on a limb and say your attitude IS terrible.
I apologize and understand if you are emo, goth or both.

Yes! Im having the exakt same problem, those cylinders and circels on the side are a bugger. Been looking on the few tutorials on ico that I fond here, and have fondout the basic idea, but a more detailed explination on it would be great.

@Igor K., The rules for this week are " ../p/7361.htm - ceddo challenges you to pixel a single isometric household item of your choice, drawn using fantasy/steampunk/sci-fi theme" I added your compy to your gallery but removed it from challenge entry because you made a literal compmy and not a fantasy/steampunk'sci-fi one, k. If you can correct this and wish to update it and do so before Sunday night, PM me to let me know and I'll add it back in. Must be before midnight my time. (US-EST) You can also edit details and re-submit as weekly challenge. Or even make a whole new pixelart :)
@ska, I don't think the soda will quality as a household item :( Add to your gallery anyhow its real cute :)

Soda not a household item??? HARSH!!!!
I'll go out on a limb and say that this site has some eager participants who appear to be continually bashed down by a small group of purists constantly moderating every detail of every entry under the guise of constructive criticism. Yes, it's a "challenge" with rules and guidelines, but sheesh.... if every submission must fit through a tiny doorway of preconception then I guess my experimental involvement with this community is going to be short lived.

Its too bad you feel that way fenstalker. I will admit that this week's title is very wide in scope. For some reason we thought household item was kinda clear, you know. Obviously we were very wrong. I suppose if I drove my car into someone's house by accident it would technically be a household item. Or even if say a house has a garage a car would be a household item too. Would you approve a an isometric pixelart car this week?
PJ IS a community site and this week like every week (has been done before) rules can be ammended a bit if the community overrules or generally feels differently. When members do not get involved, we have to do so. In no way has any bashing happened here this week.

Still have some shading and coloring to do. Its supposed to be a phone. any last minute crits (ie don't bother telling me its sh*t and I ought to re-do the whole thing). the red panel on the right is where the pipe's and such will go into the wall and hasn't even been line-arted yet. I had bigger plans for it but didn't start until yesterday, and 2morrows the ol' b-day so I don't want to devote too much time to it.

@Jal...well I've already put forward my case as to why I think this fits the challenge. It is a vague term, and once again the author of the challenge hasn't come here to clear things up...
Anyway, when I submit this I'll submit it to the challenge, if it is deemed "unchallenge worthy" so be it...
Also, if we're complaining about things that don't fit the challenge, technically an electrical outlet would be considered less of an 'item' than a bottle, since usually electrical outlets are fixed to the wall and wouldn't really be considered a seperate object... Would you approve an isometric pixelart window this week?
(not that I'm saying that Fenstalker's electrical outlet should be removed from the challenge this week...!)
While I'm at it, this is my current revision:

aha, but maybe in steampunk land an outlet would be an item, seeing as how its seperate from the wall? i don't know, just specurlatin'

Igor K But you do understand sci-fi and fantasy right?
Steam punk Its some sort of a fantasy form of the industrial revolution, were steampowered machines were introduced. However, in steamPUNK the steam part is very very much overdone, and so you can see a lot of modern items (think computers, airplanes and HOUSEHOLD ITEMS) are drawn or described as they would be running on steam. Often you see a lot of gold, a lot of wood (and less other metals, no plastic of course)
Example of a steampunk movie (and book): The GOLDEN Compass If you watch the trailer on http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/ you will surely understand better what I was talking about
Also there is some great art on deviantart: http://homarusrex.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Airship-Pilot-44217263 - http://homarusrex.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Airship-Pilot-44217263 http://kidsupernova.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Goggles-36773107 - http://kidsupernova.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Goggles-36773107 http://smakeupfx.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-ish-book-93077784 - http://smakeupfx.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-ish-book-93077784
