You gave every little segment the shadow-midtone-highlight treatment (or at least midtone-highlight), which makes the whole thing look flat. The overall form is completely lost. When you shade, start by showing the form of the whole object, then add shadows and lights to details where appropriate (for example, something in shadow shouldn't have a highlight) - but never let those details override the overall form.
Edited it a little :P.
