I love the blockiness of the leaves and the dappled effect on the shadow is great.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Breath of Fire 2! There's a scene just like this in BOF2 -- even down to the meaning of the text!Not sure about the depth of the leaves -- I wouldn't change anything else though :)

the black selective outlining is kinda ruining it, but either way this is the shit, reminds me of the old oot2D days back at ZFGC with dan barris... oh well that was long ago in a far far time in another galaxy maybe?

looks nice, but im not too keen on the image flip.trunk seems really flat to me.
the back roots should be shaded darker then the centre to give it more depth.
same with the leaves, they arnt as bad though. but as it 'bumps' back make the lumps ofleaves darker, even if its only once, and one shade darker it will help.
dont make the shadow on the start so back then divet in and then start to close at the furthest back roots. the shadow can come alittle bit more forward.
this is all speaking though as if you can do what you want, because i dont know what your limitations are
