Here’s an exercise I did with the NES palette and restrictions. It’s the head of Deacon from Wings of Aetos animated in an eight-directional rotation with a resolution of 16x16 color count of 3 plus transparency.
Deacon’s epic pompadour gives him a silhouette that’s easy to make out even at low resolutions, but suggesting a chrome shine and maintaining consistent detailing proved to be an enormous challenge with such a low color count.
Overall, this sort of exercise is excellent not only for practicing consistent spriting over several angles, but also for learning to build palettes from a fixed color set. If you’ve done rotations previously, try them with additional restrictions and elevate the exercise to a new level. |
