So glad you decided to make (and submit) an entry! I really like how you have rendered the light in the water surface seen from below. It adds great contrast to the dark center of the image, and leads the eye to the undead mermaid. Speaking of which, I think you did her skeleton just great. The tentacles could have benefitted from being in a dark colour different to the background to make them stand out slightly more. It was a bit tricky to distinguish parts of them at first, and the one at the mermaid's boob blends a lot with her body. So, making them dark green or something might both make them stand out against the water and her body. Overall I really, really like the concept for your piece, and I think it is one of the more unique ones out of all the challenge entries. Undead mermaid for the win! I really like how dark it is, and agree with Lijj on it being "goth without trying too hard". Her hair is great too! It really looks like it's underwater and softly flowing.
P.S.: Just noticed one gravestone says "Lake", and the other "PJ", haha. No "Linnea" grave stone? Or am I the mermaid?
Hey Lijj !
I did not directly avoid to render the hands just for the sake of avoiding them. However I decided to make her look chilling within the graveyard - letting the (our perspective) left arm being lifted/resting on the tentacles. Additionally, her being a mermaid should make it easier to have a weirdly arranged pose underwater - as some mystical water physics could apply. Therefore her hands sink into the deep. Though the right arm still partly renders a hand holding a fishbone.
The small size of her shoulders/body parts was intentional in terms of making her partly emaciated (without pushing it too hard, could have been interesting) - being an undead mermaid. I thought pushing/emphasising on weird joints would make it more logical for me. If it simply looks wrong for you without any mercy, I can totally understand you, though.
Thanks a lot for your critique : ) Funny and especially interesting to hear you think it looks a bit goth. Makes me think a bit about my stylisation on this and in general.
Creepy and bright! I'm a bit confused about what's going on with the arms and shoulders; the shoulders look cramped in and kinda small. And did you just decide to completely avoid rendering the hands? Either way, faved and voted for because it's still great and so goth (goth without trying too hard; which is the only way it can be). Something too about the composition.
Awesome!
