This combines all what I like about fantasty art. Great piece!
A very nicely drawn piece of work.
I also love how you described the process. That happens to me sometimes. Things keep changing and sometimes it cant be helped even though it may slow the process down.
The fact you self analize so critically is the key to your continued development as you surely know!
I hope you remain unsatisfied at your works to your grave LOL

Actually I am so glad to read it, because the more I stare at it, the more it seems to me static and unnatural.

All credits about anatomy goes to A.Loomis, famous American artist. He has some exeptional books about figure drawing and basic anathomy. I am working at his tuts at the moment.

The anatomy looks pretty spot on, line art and shading. 
It honestly makes me jelly of your skills.
