Sorry for the slow reply. I tried some simpler tiles, and found two things: I'm bad at making simple tiles, and these don't work very well on a large scale. See that here --> http://imgur.com/gallery/kZRnM
Also, a test at making "slanted" tiles --> http://imgur.com/gallery/tB4SY
It could've definetly used more interesting colors, but this was more like sketching a thought I might come back to. Thanks for the feedback though!
I think using light levels to show depth is a good idea, but it feels rather bland here since you're just shading/tinting the tiles with black and white. At the very least, use some interesting colours for the effect xP Ideally, I think tile variants for different depths would look better than just tinting - have far-away tiles sink into shadow with less detail, have more saturated colours and more detail on tiles closest to the camera, etc.
The tiles are also so busy that the interiors of the tiles have more contrast in them than adjacent tiles at different heights do, making the height not read very well. This method would probably work better with simpler-looking tiles.
I think this is really neat concept and presentation (even though I agree with Eishiya's crit) kind of like a proto fez
