The statues may be looking less like statues because of the highlights. This plays into the roll of the texture as you've mentioned. Also, unless it's painted, or made of two different materials, the statue would be consistant in color(pants, skin, horn, etc.).

On another note, and not exclusive to this piece, there are some AA that has me second looking. Mostly where two AA areas converge on opposite sides of a line.
