That's a great way to look at it! And as long as you're having fun, then you've got the point of the challenge as far as I'm concerned.
Interesting trivia.
The challenge is open to many ideas with the lack of restrictions. Besides the palette, the restrictions invite flow type creations. My experience anyways.
Fun fact: The original monster Americans know as Rodan was originally named Radon as an exposition of the name PteRAnaDON. It was changed (some say in a translation error) to avoid confusion with the element radon. I also heard that, at the time the movie was released, there was an American actor named Ray Don, which would've been equally confusing when audiences went to see a popular heartthrob and instead got a supersonic dinosaur.
