Bland? Nah man. The details are quite interesting. If I could pick one thing out of all that interesting stuff, it would be the dark yet glittery water. It fits well in that cave.
I went to get a tileset for you, and two things happened:
- I realized I had not yet written a weblog post about tilesets and why not write one now? (I got sidetracked.)
- I discovered that ASEprite's jpeg compression comes in three flavours: ~Pristine!~, Mushy, and Soup. I would have liked to produce something a bit less horrid but the best I could do was-- well, I suppose you can see for yourself. :/ (The peek I have arranged for you is pretty ghastly and I apologize.)
You can find the image (and a bunch of written stuff I imagine you know and do not need to read about) here:

Anyway, the thing to remember is that each time spot has (up to) four layers, so some cels are actually multiple tiles stacked on top of eachother. Maybe that is actually cheating but I do not feel as thought it is
Oh! Also! The graphic I posted here is trimmed a bit from the full size of the map, becuse the extrema were a bit bland. Tile count notwithstanding, the numbers should still work out!
I hope that this sates your curiousity, though, and thank you for asking because I would not have written about it if you had not!~ :D
Whoa! I couldn't ever tell it was tile based.
Can I take a peek on your tileset for this?
It can be compressed, in case you are concerned about it leaking.
Thanks!
In the finished version, I was hoping to get a subtle animation on the glittery bits of the water, maybe with palette cycling or something, but I have not gotten that far with it yet.
Glad to hear that the water looks good standing, though! On the right track! :D
