Take any advice from me with some salt, because I'm really new to this too. I think you did a good job here. I saw your second attempt at a tree too, but I like the trunk on this one better while like the leaves on the second one better. In analyzing my preferences, my best guess is that the trunk in the second one did not have as good looking roots, nor did the colors contrast enough when zoomed out, unlike in the first attempt. The tree trunk looks very good in this first attempt, to me.
Anyway, I hope you got something out of that.
