Based on this old drawing, which I made a few years ago.
I always wanted to animate the thing and today I felt like doing so. Left out a couple of details though, especially on the legs.

15 colors, including transparency and the different background tones.

updated: Made the body shake on hitting the ground with the feet and also made the pilots head react on that.
updated again: fixed the pilot head timing issue

This is quite good. I always mess up when I try to make a slow walk cycle.

sharprm (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/10/2008 10:38:17 AM
Should make the end of the flame thrower bounce up an down. Very nice otherwise!

Dennis (Level 6 Commander) at 3/25/2008 9:45:31 AM
I don't know, but an urge is growing inside me to make more sprite animations soon.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 3/23/2008 3:11:07 PM
how come I haven't eaten this before?

shmupstick (Level 4 Deputy) at 10/27/2007 3:00:35 AM
Agree with the others, smooth like a baby bum!
Like all of you pieces, great colors and humorous.

Lollige (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 5/27/2007 2:57:03 AM
thats one of the smoothests animations I have ever seen!!

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 5/18/2007 10:55:02 PM
That animation is smooth as butter. +fav

The legs are excellent. You've gone and got the hardest part right which is brilliant.
My only critique would be to tilt the cockpit forward slighty when either leg comes down at the front and, when the leg is tucked up, tilt the cockpit back a little.
You'll have to do this subtly but it'll give an overall movement to the sprite as a whole.

Thanks for the new comments as well.
I agree and I've fixed the pilots head reaction.
The idea with the tank is nice too, but it's probably not going to happen.

OldSkoolLink (Level 2 Corporal) at 5/22/2006 6:21:17 PM
This anim is just so nice, but , the pilot reaction looks weird.

REO THE FOX (Level 8 Shodan) at 5/22/2006 6:24:40 AM

You should add this to your tank animation and when the tank kills the first guy this one come and destroy the tank! btw Realy nice

22 well deserved comments so far... I love it :)

Biffo (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/21/2006 12:41:32 AM

The motion here is really spot on.

Excellent animation.

Thanks for the description.  I guess the reason it seemed machine-made is that you were so precise and formulaic in your animation process, you did many of the same things a computer program would do---I'm of course not detracting from the amount of work you put into it.

As for crits, there is a line of pixels that is shaved off the bottom of the feet in a couple frames of the animation.  Also, the head bobbing isn't timed right---it's as if it's the actual action of the driver's head that's causing the vehicle to bob.  Make the bob occur a little bit later, so it looks like it occured because of the jolt of the machine, as an aftereffect of the forceful bobbing.

Mucho kudos for making it through to the end with this animation.  I probably would have given up, as I usually do with animations.

**oh message got truncated, here is the rest**

I didn't not count the hours, but I worked on this from after waking up before noon to late after midnight, stopped only twice to eat something and once to watch a movie(some cheesy old western), so I guess it was about 12 to 14 hours of work. (which I honestly think is a little slow, because it didn't always work out the way I thought it would, so note that the above description is idealised and compressed and leaves away all the mistakes I made during the whole process). I was especially struggling with the correct positioning of the bobbing and the legs and tried combining the legs four or five times until it looked right. I hope though that the information above is at least useful to someone who wants to make a bipedal robot walking animation. :)

Dennis (Level 6 Commander) at 5/20/2006 4:36:19 PM
Thank you very much folks.

Larwick: I made a little update, shaking the body on feet hitting the ground and made the head of the pilot react on that too. I tried making the pilot bob all the time first but it didn't look right.

Capslock: It's 30 frames.

Faktablad: The animation was made in several steps.
First I pixelled the body. Then the joint where the upper leg meets it. Then I drew a circle around the upper joint to be able to tell equal distance to it in all directions. Then I pixelled the knee joint. Next, I pixelled 15 individual foot poses for the foot that is nearest to the viewer and shaded each of them. So far that was the easy part. Now for the animating: I then took just the upper joint with the circle around it and made it bob up and down. Then I added the knee joint, using the circle I had for orientation as where to move it, so that it would always be at equal distance to the joint which would later connect the leg to the body. Then I removed the orientation circle. Next I put in the 15 foot poses to the first 15 frames and then took the first of those foot poses and moved it along the floor for the last 15 frames. The next part was a bit boring, since I had the knee and the foot in position for all frames now, so the only thing left to do for the leg was to connect the center points of the joints with thick lines, which I first pixelled in just gray for all frames, then added lighting on them for all frames and finally the shadows and I tried to aa them against a semi-dark background, also with the same color that I used for the shadows(hence the slight "noise" of dark pixels that you see on the legs on light backgrounds). So at this point I had completed one full leg, which I then copied and changed the colors to darker tones for the other leg. After that it was all a matter of putting the parts together in the correct order. The tool I'm using does not have layers, but it allows cutting and pasting with a transparent background. So I cut out the dark leg, placed it on all the frames, then adjusted the bobbing of the body to match the front leg and placed the body on top of the dark leg and finally placed the light leg on top of the body. The little flame was then added afterwards. The flame is only 6 frames, which are repeating throughout the 30 frames of the walking animation. I didn't not count the hours, but I worked on this from after wa>*** Message has been truncated ***

Wow, thats extremely smooth animation... Fantastic stuff!

Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) at 5/20/2006 10:19:36 AM

Something about it doesn't look completely hand-pixeled, but very good nonetheless.

PedroAGontijo (Level 1 White Belt) at 5/20/2006 8:58:36 AM
Can't avoid falling in love with your animations. How I wish every pixel animation was this smooth!

Transformer Guy (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/20/2006 7:28:31 AM
Woah! You have a knack for making animated death machines! It sorta has The B.O.B.s animation style from some of his pieces, like his punk. But, it's still excellante. 5/5 and another fav.

Shawn (Level 7 Assassin) at 5/20/2006 7:18:39 AM
Awesome. <3333

CAPSLOCK (Level 1 White Belt) at 5/20/2006 5:48:22 AM

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 5/20/2006 5:19:11 AM

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!
Would be a neat touch if the guy inside bobbed aswel. But yeah, i love it. Fav'd.
