Yes, I'm probably fairly extreme WRT how much this irritates me.. It's like uh..
it's like the medium has become an ideology rather than just a way to make a picture, basically. And I've done this myself plenty, it's easy to do; you just start pixeling instead of thinking about the whole picture. I'd actually say it's quite hard to bring a picture to completion without in the process compromising its integrity. (whether it's pixel art or otherwise)
Mhmmm, hopefully I'm getting you here, sort of something along the lines of a stiffness about the piece emerging because of where perfectionism for the medium is trying to be achieved? I honestly think it's just the unfinished nature of this particular piece that is maybe what's catching your eye.
Either way, I'm happy that you think this is bringing something new to the table for you : )
This is refreshing, I kind of burnt out on looking at pixel art because there is kind of this.. hmm: There is 'looks pixelarty' in a good balanced sense and 'looks pixelarty' in a bad 'whole picture has been compromised in order to be perfectly clear/ dithery/AAey/etc' way; and I started to feel that a lot of PA fell into that second category. This is definitely in the former category; solid forms, judicious use of color and value and pixel technique, without overdoing anything. Mindful.
Thanks for all the kind stuff you say mandrill
@dpixel
thanks! If anything I'm quite satisfied with the lighting too.
@dokitsu
Thanks man :D
@theo
Aha, yea had a couple others say it, I don't see it but im glad you guys think so :)
Like I said before. It does look like a digital painting.
Just amazing!
Thanks tony! Been awhile since I've seen you post anything on here : )
@Taki
Yea, I do tend to spend a lot of time tweaking colours, so that's nice to hear!
@gecimen
That's true. Idk tho, in general I do tend to like the feel of x2 for pixelart.
@andy
Aha, thanks so much man, good luck with your game :D
@beepboop pakid & Dino
Thanks guys, I appreciate it a lot!
Skittle it looks really really good and finished in x1. The left tree looked really bothersome in x2.
Anyways awesome job, really nice oil paint feel.
Just realized that i'm faving your stuff a lot. Your colors are so incredibly comfortable to look at.
Just changed it to x1. I figured it looks nicer at x2 and would leave a better impression since some people might not zoom in.
@pixer
Glad you think so :)
ty Daniele, love u homie :D
@elk
That's fucking hot
@solo & fleja
Thanks guys!
Aha thanks man! I saw the figure drawings you've been doing, they're so good :O
@upper, dopple & gennoveus
thanks guys :D
Dude! This is awesome! Congratulations on hitting next level. :)
You are an inspiration
Nice! Gorgeous pixels! I too admire the amount of effort you put into getting the perfect scene. Lovely clusters and textures, even if some of it is unfinished/lacks polish.
Oh and the lighting and colors are top notch!
Wow, the number of dramatic changes in that gif! There's something about this image that is very appealing to me; it really pops. Very inspirational!
Yea, that's sort of something that I've learnt now over the past year or so. I Usually get much better results if I just scrap a thing that's not going over too well and restart entirely, even if I've put a fair amount of work into it. I think it's important to not be "in love" with the first thing you make, however I'm sure that's very subjective. I have tried to go back and polish it but I just wasn't feeling it, looking back on it there's a lot of underlying issues besides polish that could use some work -at the time I think I got what was needed out from the piece, I think. Thanks a lot jinn <3
@amorph
Thanks! Wish you had more wesnoth stuff in your gallery, your animations are gold!
@sqd
Yea I feel you. That's the big reason why I'm transitioning to digital painting, much easier to get away with a less polished looking piece.
@chrilley
Yea agreed, that's for sure the biggest spot that could use some work.
@quake
Yea I get what you're saying, to a certian degree I think you may be right -still no denying the obvious areas that are a bit of an eye sore. Thanks man.
Polished or not, this is quite an inspiration. Seeing this a while ago, either on DeviantArt or Twitter, made me feel like a sucky pixel artist, which is pretty awesome.
oh man I love the painterly look of this piece. the unpolished quality makes it more appealing imo
Amazing to see how many times you redid most of it in the wip. Gotta admire your guts for scrapping something that would look good enough to be replaced with something that's even better!
I wish it was just a tad bit more polished, but I love it either way :)
Looks great to me! The defined parts like the tree texture and leaves are especially solid!
I think the only part that bugs me a bit is the darkest blob of green near the top left. It draws attention to the "unpolished" that you mention, which I otherwise don't mind in the slightest with pieces like this. You really dont need 100% everywhere imo :)
Lovely composition. Not overly polished, but the style lends itself well to the scene.
So peaceful...
