I'm glad you think my solution works :D It is a pretty odd situation.

Looking at this piece again, I noticed there's a really high colour count - 600+, even though the piece itself looks like it should be ~40 colours. Did something go wrong in saving it? Did you use a gradient for the window light, or blur the lineart? Many of the colours in this piece are indistinguishable from others, and are only used for only a few pixels each.

The spots where the ladder's outlines and the book outlines are right next to each other stand out a lot. Even though it doesn't make "sense", I think it looks better if you remove the ladder outline in those bits, and have the books visible. It doesn't hurt the ladder's readability at all, and avoids those blocky 2px lines. Here's a comparison gif to show what I mean.
