Viewing this on a grey background made me think you might have been using less than 100% transparency in some areas. Great work on choosing colors! My only gripe is the flatness if the rocket boosters when they turn at the top and bottom. My guess is that you didn't have enough space, as you said, trying to work within requirements and all that jazz. One thing that could help with space constraints is to just leave off the lineart/outline entirely. When you don't think of an object in the 2d sense, but instead as an actual object in 3d space, it can help you with shadows and lighting issues which, ultimately, will help you not to waste colors. Nothing wrong with outlines, though, by all means! But there are times and places for certain techniques and times and places to leave certain techniques for later. Choose your battles! When working with small sprites, it could help to leave out the lineart so you can feel less like cramming detail and more like sculpting with wee little fingers. . I really like this and think you have some great ideas for being a self-stated pixel art novice. But the more you do the better you'll get and the easier it will get to find your groove. Keep it up! I can't wait for your next piece and animation!
Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, unfortunately a lot of the issues could be fixed if I wasn't imposing such weird restrictions on myself. I'm trying to keep the main ship and some basic enemies within 16x16, and with borders, as I plan on having the background objects be borderless. I'm also causing myself a lot more hassle on the programming side of things with my self-created rules as well, but it has actually been working better than I anticipated.
