I think its more that the darkest brown you have isn't a good transition shade to the black, because it's too similar to it. And the areas in shadow are also lacking texture.

Pretty neat, though I think you could've added a darker brown color to transition to the black outline more naturally.
Also Truistic, do you have some kind of problem?
I really like the very dark brown around the joints, and didn't want to soften them, so instead I just added another, lighter dark brown.
