So, this fellow is Tapio, spirit or god of the forest in Finnish mythology who figures prominently in the Kalevala. His wife is the goddess of the forest, Mielikki. He is the father of Annikki, Tellervo, Nyyrikki (the god of hunting), and Tuulikki. Tapio has a beard of lichen and eyebrows of moss and eyes like two bottomless blue lakes.
Tapio was also ruler in forest. Folk of Tapio lived within deepest holes in woodland which is called Tapiola. The folk countained the most powerful animals, forest spirits, elves, trolls and gnomes who protected the forest. They can be seens as the power of forest. |
