Insert a Huge comment about how this piece is good, here.
Thanks for the feedback! And great first post! I don't know about well-respected, but I'm just trying to carve my own little niche out of that Great Wall made of pixels. You know, the truth is, this is art! Your interpretation is just as valid as the inspiration that was used to create it. Those kinds of critiques are what help others see things they can improve on because no two people see the same thing when they view pixels it seems like. A fresh perspective is always needed for the honest artist! Just don't be too cheeky about it !
So I appreciate it!
As far as the things that you brought up, she was really a rush order. I'd never really got a chance to come back until now and explain myself. I usually do a better job of giving a lot of detail as to how things are made in the description. In fact, I am working on this submission and will update it within the next month or two (hopefully). There's just a lot of other things going on. The flashing is really just a style effect similar to my recent Godzilla submission. So you're right! There really isn't a purpose, per se. I am trying to figure out ways to use the 50 millisecond frames in different ways. This time I used one frame textured and the other smooth alternated to see what it would turn out to be. I just like to the effect, I guess, and went with it. It's basically a lot of experimentation. Her flat face is partly due to not being able to see the complete picture, but then again, how am I supposed to play SNES on a curved controller !?
The proporsion of the face look good, but the controls make the cheaks feel flat. I like the burst from the right eye (left of frame) and its reflections on the face but the whole face flickering seems to have no reason. the reflection of the red getting across the bridge of the nose from the right eye seems far feteched unless that hole is raised very high above the nose. I'd like to see the red tint from the eye brought out more. I think it should stay more icolited on the left side of the face (right side of the image) cause of how the the human face curves.
Maybe I shouldn't be so critical for my very first post on any art here ever... particually to a high level well respected pixel artist.
