Generally, pieces aren't voted into the gallery unless they look like each color was placed deliberately. On this site they talk about "palette discipline" so using as few colors as possible gives you a better chance. I was in your position last summer. Check out the tutorials under the features tab--that's where I learned a bunch of neat stuff.
