Thank you! The honey is edible and honeypot ants are actually considered a delicacy in many parts of the world! They serve as a storage unit for other ants in the nest, preserving the food until it is needed.

I remember reading about these when I was a kid. I believe they live in resource scarce environments. The same book also mentionned a species of crustaceans that lives in bone dry lakes, hibernate throughout the year, they have to rehydrate, eat and reproduce in the very small window of rain season.
Interstingly enough, "gorging" is a recurrent pattern among all living things in the desert, even among humans (and other mammals) !
